  • In the Footsteps of the Wild Hunt

    Igor Manzura•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2026

This article examines the ancient origins of the folkloric motif of the Wild Hunt, which was widely disseminated across Europe during the Middle Ages and the early modern period. The origin of this tradition and its original meaning are reconstructed through an analysis of its three main components: the figure of the Wild Huntsman, his retinue, and the object of the hunt. It is argued that folkloric versions of this narrative reflect only in a di…

    Igor Manzura•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2024

The article discusses the problem of changes in ritual practice in the steppe zone of Eastern Europe in the 5th millennium BC. One of the reflections of these transformations is flint and stone axes with an arch-shaped butt, which are often found in the ritual sphere in the form of hoards and funerary offerings. In terms of their morphological features, size and thoroughness of workmanship these items correspond to jadeite axes of the Varna type,…

  • The earliest burial complexes of the Kubey cemetery

  • Passions for Children or an Etude on the Supreme Third

    Igor Manzura•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2023

  • Tokens of time

    Open Access•Igor Manzura•ARTICLE•Godišnjak Centra za balkanološka…•2022

The article presents an attempt to develop the periodization of the Cucuteni-Tripolye culture in terms of cultural anthropology. The scheme is based on common consideration of different manifestations of material culture and related social and historic-cultural phenomena. It is built along three separate but interrelated lines. The first line embraces the most significant material symbols of each phase. The second line exemplifies the nature of s…

Archaeological evidence allows us to discern in the culture three separate strata or classes which are conditionally designated as the Nobles, the Honoured, and the Commoners. Social elite represented a core within the noble class. It is distinguished by specific attributes which illustrate its attempts to resolve one of the most compl…

    Open Access•Igor Manzura•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Archaeology•2005•Cited by: 7•References: 4

The occupation of the steppe region north of the Black Sea by farming or herding groups in the fifth and fourth millennia BC has been a controversial question. At the core of the problem is the changing relationship between Cucuteni‐Tripole farming groups in the forest‐steppe zone and their neighbours in the true steppe zone. Three phases of this relationship are discussed, in the Early Copper Age, Late Copper Age and Early Bronze Age (c.5000–300…

  • Cultural Groups From the Steppes of Eastern Europe in the Eneolithic Period and Early Bronze Age

    Open Access•Igor Manzura•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Archaeology•1994

The later fourth and third millennia bc (= later fifth to earlier third millennium BC Cal) was an important period of change in eastern Europe, which saw the domestication and spread of the horse in the steppe area north of the Black Sea, and complex interactions between these livestock‐raising groups and agricultural populations in south‐east Europe. The correlation of cultural sequences between the Balkans and the Pontic steppes is crucial to a…
