  • Anaphoric reference in a German-Polish bilingual child

    Anna Jachimek, Klaus-Michael Köpcke et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics Vanguard•2023

The study examines the use of referring expressions in anaphoric contexts in a German-Polish bilingual child between age 2;0 to 4;0. The longitudinal corpus consists of 160 video recordings of spontaneous speech in both languages. There are fundamental differences in the way anaphoric reference is expressed in German and Polish. Speakers of German refer to discourse-given referents either with a definite NP, a personal or a demonstrative pronoun.…

  • The Acquisition of the NP in a German-Polish Bilingual Child. Evidence for Cross-Linguistic Influence

Open Access•Anna Jachimek, Christine Dimroth et al.•ARTICLE•Discours•2022

This article contributes to a debate in the linguistic and psychological literature that centers around the question if grammatical systems which are acquired simultaneously are separate right from the beginning or if they overlap. We will have a close look on developmental patterns involved in the construction of reference systems in German and Polish by a bilingual child between age 1;5 to 4;0. The German and Polish reference system is of parti…

  • Metapher und Metonymie: Theoretische, methodische und empirische Zugänge

    Open Access•Constanze Spieß, Klaus-Michael Köpcke•BOOK•Metapher und Metonymie•2015

Empirical approaches based on qualitative or quantitative methods of corpus linguistics have become a central paradigm within linguistics. The series takes account of this fact and provides a platform for approaches within synchronous linguistics as well as interdisciplinary works with a linguistic focus which devise new ways of working empirically and develop new data-based methods and theoretical models for empirical linguistic analyses.

  • Grammatik in der Universität und für die Schule: Theorie, Empirie und Modellbildung

Klaus-Michael Köpcke, Arne Ziegler•BOOK•Grammatik in der Universität und…•2007

This volume draws together current studies and research findings from the fields of university research into German grammar and grammar teaching in schools. The contributors outline the relevance of grammatical research in meeting the demands of present-day school German teaching between the requirements of competence in grammar, literature, language and text, and confront established views of grammar teaching in schools with topical problems.

  • Nominalphrasen ohne lexikalischen Kopf — Zur Bedeutung des Genus für die Organisation des mentalen Lexikons am Beispiel der Autobezeichnungen im Deutschen

    Open Access•Klaus-Michael Köpcke, David A Zubin•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Sprachwissenschaft•2005

Car names and car-referring expressions are analysed such as (a) "der Berlingo Multispace Ocean," with characteristic default masculine gender in spite of the absence of a gender-bearing head; (b) "der Audi A3 TDI Ambition Automatik" with default masculine gender despite the presence of an apparent divergent gender-bearing head; and (c) "das weie Buick-Elektra-Cabrio" with divergent gender (feminine or neuter) conforming to its apparent gender-be…

    Klaus-Michael Köpcke•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für germanistische…•2002

  • On the acquisition of the German plural markings

    Open Access•Dagmar Bittner, Klaus-Michael Köpcke•ARTICLE•ZAS Papers in Linguistics•2001

In the following, we will discuss the acquisition of plural forms in German from the unified perspective of the two, in our opinion compatible, approaches, on the basis of a longitudinal data sample of eight children. There are at least six recordings of each child, all of whom are girls. Together, the data cover the acquisition period from 1;11 to 2;10. One may thus anticipate that the data sample under investigation reflects the transition from…

  • The acquisition of plural marking in English and German revisited: Schemata versus rules

    Open Access•Klaus-Michael Köpcke•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•1998

This article contributes to a debate in the linguistic and psychological literature that centres around the representation of morphologically complex words in the grammar and in the lexicon. The issue is whether inflectional morphology is rule-based (i.e. symbolically represented), or whether the assumption of pattern association is more adequate to account for the facts. On the basis of the analysis of acquisitional data the article strongly arg…

  • Cognitive Constraints on the Order of Subject and Object in German

    David A Zubin, Klaus-Michael Köpcke•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•1985

The ordering of subject and object, especially in the so-called clause "middle-field," is a perennial problem both for the grammar of German, and for syntactic theories of linearization. While formalist accounts (e.g. Engel, 1977) and semantic accounts (e.g. Lerenz, 1977a) have made valuable contributions to an understanding of S/O order, their monocausal approaches have only limited descriptive adequacy. This paper presents evidence that the ord…
