    SYNOPSIS The progressive and potential constructions are generally regarded as constructions involving the use of the deficient verb stems sa and ka respectively, or as mono‐verbal constructions in which sa and ka function as verb prefixes. An objective analysis of the situation shows that they are actually changing from deficient verb constructions into mono‐verbal constructions.   • An augmentative noun class in Tsonga

    SYNOPSIS An augmentative noun class, not mentioned before by students of the language, has been discovered in Tsonga. It is reminiscent of class 21 as found in certain other Bantu languages, but the phonology of its prefix, ji‐, indicates that it cannot immediately be connected with class 21. It seems that it results from a fusion of classes 5 and 21, although other theories may possibly also explain its etymology. This class is unique in that it…
