  • Child Studies Multiple: Collaborative play for thinking through theories and methods

    Open Access•A Sparrman, Y Hrechaniuk et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Unbound Journal of…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 25

This text is an exploration of collaborative thinking and writing through theories, methods, and experiences on the topic of the child, children, and childhood. It is a collaborative written text (with 32 authors) that sprang out of the experimental workshop Child Studies Multiple. The workshop and this text are about daring to stay with mess, 'un-closure' , and uncertainty in order to investigate the (e)motions and complexities of being either a…

  • Inferring volumetric changes at a shallow lake from subpixel satellite-derived shorelines

    Open Access•Jesús Palomar‐Vázquez, Jesús Palomar-Vázquez et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Geography•2022

Satellite-Derived Shorelines at Gallocanta Lake from mid-resolution satellite imagery. • SDS with subpixel accuracy leads to an accurate definition of the lake's perimeter. • A large package of SDS to define the three-dimensionality of the shore (1984–2020). • Volume is estimated by modeling the relationship between water surface and elevation. • Efficient RS approach for monitoring water bodies through large periods of time

  • Figurations: Child, Bodies, Worlds

Claudia Castañeda, Inderpal Grewal et al.•BOOK•Figurations•2020

Always in the process of becoming, inherently incomplete, the child is a remarkably malleable figure. In Figurations, Claudia Castañeda shows how this malleability is itself generated-how the child is "made" by different constituencies and how the resulting historically, geographically, and culturally specific figures are put to widely divergent uses, often to very powerful effect. Situated at the intersection of feminist, postcolonial, cultural,…

  • Uprootings/Regroundings Questions of Home and Migration: Questions of Home and Migration

Claudia Castada, Sara Ahmed et al.•BOOK•Uprootings/Regroundings•2020

New forms of transnational mobility and diasporic belonging have become emblematic of a supposed 'global' condition of uprootedness. Yet much recent theorizing of our so-called 'postmodern' life emphasizes movement and fluidity without interrogating who and what is 'on the move'. This original and timely book examines the interdependence of mobility and belonging by considering how homes are formed in relationship to movement. It suggests that mo…

  • Paleoflood records from sinkholes using an example from the Ebro River floodplain, northeastern Spain

Open Access•Francisco Gutierrez, Mario Zarroca et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2017

This work introduces for the first time the concept of using sinkholes in fluvial valleys as recorders of past floods. The notion is illustrated through the investigation of a complex sinkhole located in a broad floodplain underlain by salt-bearing Cenozoic evaporites. This active sinkhole comprises a large subsidence depression affecting the floodplain and the edge of a terrace, and a nested collapse sinkhole that used to host a sinkhole pond. A…

  • Soils of Barbués and Torres de Barbués, Ebro Basin, NE Spain

Open Access•Claudia Castañeda, Carmen Castañeda et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2017

Irrigation is needed for profitable agriculture in the central Ebro valley, one of the driest regions in Europe. In this region, aridity and outcrops of saliferous strata induce soil salinity in some irrigated districts. We present a soil map of two municipalities (about 32 km2) coping with soil salinity and currently changing their irrigation from flood to pressurized systems. The 1:25,000 scale map displays 27 Soil Series following the Soil Tax…

  • Coastal landforms and environments in the central sector of Gallocanta saline lake (Iberian Range, Spain)

Open Access•Claudia Castañeda, Carmen Castañeda et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2013

Gallocanta Lake (NE Spain), with a high ecological value, is the largest and best preserved saline lake in Western Europe. The aim of this study is to map the landforms developed in the margins of the central sector of Gallocanta Lake, at adequate scale for the study of soils and habitats, which is needed for the delineation, management and protection of the wetland. Photointerpretation was combined with topographical, geological, and satellite d…

  • Robot visions

    Open Access•Claudia Castañeda, L Suchman•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•2013•Cited by: 9•References: 15

This article explores the resonating figures of primate, child, and robot in contemporary technoscientific corporealizations of the 'almost human'. We take as our model (in)organism 'Lucy the Robot Orangutan', roboticist Steve Grand's project to create an artificial life form with a mind of its own. One aspect of Lucy's figuration by Grand, we argue, which ties her to Haraway's analysis of the primate, is of the robot as a model for animal, and m…

  • Redefining Cancer during the Interwar Period: British Medical Officers of Health, State Policy, Managerialism, and Public Health

Rosa María Medina Doménech, Claudia Castañeda et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2007•References: 11

The implementation of radiation technologies within the British hospital system was a significant element in the establishment of the managerial organization of medicine in the interwar period. One aspect of this implementation process was that, in order to install cancer patients within the “radiotherapy factory,” British medical officers of health adapted their organizational cultures from being environmentalists to being administrators of medi…
