    Open Access•Jenni Sahramaa, Mervi Pasanen•ARTICLE•Fennoscandia Archaeologica•2026

A new ancient costume reconstruction was published in 2024 as a part of the Lahti Historical Museum’s exhibition. The costume includes a linen shirt, a light blue wool dress, a darker blue peplos dress with heavy ornaments held by oval convex brooches, a reddish-brown apron, a blue shawl, silver bracelets and two glass beads, based on the finds from Hollola Kirkkailanmäki grave 4/1978, dated to the early 13th century. In this article, the authors…

  • Spiral decorated shawls in Late Iron Age Finland

    Open Access•Jenni Sahramaa, Mervi Pasanen•ARTICLE•Fennoscandia Archaeologica•2024

Spiral decorated shawls in Late Iron Age Finland (c. AD 800–1200) were elaborate and special garments with strong connections to identity. In prior research, richly decorated shawls from female graves have been reconstructed for ancient costumes. In this study, we trace the sensorial properties of shawls using microarchaeological methods, experimental archaeology and reconstructions. Examples from female graves, male graves and a child’s grave ar…

  • Exploring materiality and sensory experience through Viking Age reenactment

    Open Access•Ulla Nordfors, Jenni Sahramaa•ARTICLE•Time and Mind•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 45

Sensory archaeology explores how past individuals engaged with their world through all their senses. The use of senses is also a cornerstone in Viking Age reenactment. We argue that research on Viking Age material culture can benefit from the knowledge and experience of Viking Age reenactors, particularly when studying the sensory dimension of using and crafting objects. The traditional dichotomy between archaeologists and reenactors can also be …

  • Colorants Detected by HPLC-PDA in Textiles from 13th Century Lieto Ristinpelto, Finland

Open Access•Krista Wright, Ina Vanden Berghe et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2023•References: 1

Organic colorants of textiles found in the female burial of Lieto Ristinpelto, SW Finland, were analyzed by HPLC-PDA. The textiles’ visible colors varied from different brownish shades to blueish, greenish, and reddish hues. The aim of the chromatographic analysis was to deepen the current understandings of the dyes used in Finland at the transition between the 12th and 13th centuries AD, i.e., at the beginning of the local Medieval period, and t…
