  • Replicating the North-South Academic Performance Divide in Italy at the Smallest Administrative Level

    Davide Piffer•ARTICLE•Comparative Sociology•2025•References: 1

This study examines how geography and socioeconomic factors affect educational performance in Italian municipalities. Using mixed-effects modeling and structural equation modeling, we found a strong link between latitude and standardized test scores ( INVALSI scores, β = 0.72–0.89), with northern regions outperforming southern ones. This association remains significant even after accounting for income, regional clustering, and other variables, su…

  • Regional Migration Patterns and Educational Outcomes in Italy

Davide Piffer, Daniel Van Pelt et al.•ARTICLE•Comparative Sociology•2025

Using surname distributions as proxies for historical migration, the authors study how ancestral geography relates to contemporary educational outcomes across Italian provinces and 2,244 municipalities. A directional TF-IDF framework quantifies the prevalence of Southern-origin surnames. Regions with higher Southern surname shares perform systematically worse on standardized assessments, net of economic controls. At the provincial level, Southern…

  • A Study of the Heritability of Intelligence in Sudan

Open Access•Howida Sirelkhatim Abdalrahim Toto, Davide Piffer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2019

Intelligence was assessed using the Standard Progressive Matrices in 316 MZ and 550 same-sex DZ twins with a mean age of 10 years in Sudan. Heritability was estimated at 0.172 and shared environmental influences at 0.596.

  • Correlation of the Comt Val158Met polymorphism with latitude and a hunter-gather lifestyle suggests culture–gene coevolution and selective pressure on cognition genes due to climate

    Open Access•Davide Piffer•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•2013

Dual-inheritance theory posits that the genotype has an impact on the evolution of human behavior and that cultural traits can be constrained by genetic imperatives. A large body of studies provides evidence that the functional catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) Val158Met polymorphism is associated with executive function, working memory (WM), and intelligence. A survey of the population genetics database provides evidence that COMT gene frequen…
