Using stable isotope analysis to obtain dietary profiles from old hair
Stable isotope composition of human tissue reflects that of foods consumed, and can provide information about diet independent of artifactual remains. Here we refine and test this method by analyzing nitrogen (delta(15)N) and carbon (delta(13)C) isotope ratios in historic North American Plains Indians hair. Gas-source isotope-ratio mass spectrometry provides high-precision data for both delta(15)N and delta(13)C (+/-0.2 per thousand, 1 sigma) in …

Clovis
Soil chemical identification of ten thousand years of prehistoric human activity areas at the Munsungun Lake Thoroughfare, Maine
Flake Dispersal Experiments
Time lapse studies of frost action effects on arctic and subarctic surficial archaeological sites have been conducted from 1973 to the present. Test plots of experimentally produced flakes were constructed in 1973 in the Tangle Lakes Region of the Central Alaska Range and subsequently remapped and photographed in 1974, 1976, and 1980. Similar test plots were laid out in the arctic foothills province of the Brooks Range. Observations made during t…

Bone Foreshafts from a Clovis Burial in Southwestern Montana
Formal and functional analyses of bone artifacts from a Clovis burial in southwestern Montana suggest that they were constructed to serve as (detachable or nondetachable) foreshafts for attaching fluted projectile points to lance shafts.
Millie's Camp
An abandoned contemporary Indian camp site in the central Canadian Rockies is analysed, using the activity area concept. The assumption is made that the structured distribution of features and artefacts reflect aspects of the former group's organization. Interpretations were tested by consulting one of the previous camp occupants. Millie's testimony proved that many of the 'common sense' interpretations made were incorrect
