Food Consumption in Global Perspective: Essays in the Anthropology of Food in Honour of Jack Goody
The globalization of food consumption has often been equated with the loss of culinary traditions and the homogenization of cuisines. By contrast, the anthropologists, historians and sociologists contributing to this collection reveal both rapid changes and also profound and sometimes surprising continuities in local food consumption practices in the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and use these to shed light on shifting social …

The Lesbian Art Project
Critics and artists influenced by the tenets of queer theory have dismissed much of the artwork made in the 1970s from a lesbian feminist perspective. The result has been very little being known or written about this pioneering work. This article is concerned with exploring an often overlooked aspect of lesbian art history: the activities and events associated with the Lesbian Art Project (LAP) founded by Terry Wolverton and Arlene Raven at the W…

"Moving on," Men and the Changing Character of Interwar Working-Class Neighborhoods: From the Files of the Manchester and Liverpool City Police
Investigations of complaints regarding police families made to the Manchester and Liverpool City Police provide insights into working-class neighborhoods not available in standard sources. The files suggest that interwar neighborhoods were losing long-term residents and becoming more diverse and variable. Families tried to find areas with similar standards regarding noise, space and privacy. Formerly stable neighborhoods changed, creating stress …
The future of molecular medicine
These and related topics were the subject of discussions at a recent international forum, the 4th Berlin Colloquium of the Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz Foundation, organised in cooperation with the Max Delbruck Centre for Molecular Medicine in Berlin. More than two hundred international participants met in Berlin on 10 May 2000 to receive a status report on ‘The future of molecular medicine’; the meeting was also intended to offer a forum for t…

Waiting for Performance
y way of opening his review of Roselee Goldberg's Performance: Live Art Since 1960 [see PAJ 63], critic Jon Erickson recalled that he and a group of friends got together to try and define performance art-a task that they ultimately concluded was impossible. Our instincts told us that performance art did seem like something new and different, and its difference largely consisted of disrupting the very categories we were trying to distinguish over …

Hostility and myocardial ischemia in coronary artery disease patients: Evaluation by gender and ischemic index
Two studies assess relationships of hostility to extent and severity of exercise-induced cardiac ischemia and daily life ischemia in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). CAD patients (N = 80) who underwent exercise tomographic thallium testing to assess myocardial perfusion completed the Cook-Medley Hostility Inventory (Ho). A Composite Hostility (Chost) score obtained from the Ho scale was also used. Statistically controlling for the eff…
Construction of the casa grande by sequential high precision C‐14 dating
Two composite radiocarbon dates on wood beams from a unique, prehistoric building in southern Arizona are the result of growth series subsampling of the beams and statistical evaluation of radiocarbon dates on the subsamples. This procedure avoids some of the problems caused by secular variations in the biospheric 14 C activity and by the dating of specimens grown over a range of years. This procedure yields results similar to more precise tree‐r…
