These and related topics were the subject of discussions at a recent international forum, the 4th Berlin Colloquium of the Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz Foundation, organised in cooperation with the Max Delbruck Centre for Molecular Medicine in Berlin. More than two hundred international participants met in Berlin on 10 May 2000 to receive a status report on ‘The future of molecular medicine’; the meeting was also intended to offer a forum for the interested public. Medical specialists and scientists described the future as promising – but also claimed that the advances are as yet only at a very early stage
