  • Exploratory Study on the Association between Interpersonal Violence Experiences and Alcohol Use among Adolescents

    Neta Peleg‐oren, N Peleg-Oren et al.•ARTICLE•Social Work Research•2013

Although a high prevalence of interpersonal violence among adolescents has been documented, we know very little about the association between interpersonal violence and alcohol use among adolescents. This study examines the relation between interpersonal violence experiences and alcohol use among a general random sample of 4,564 adolescents recruited through a randomized school-based survey of high school students in Florida. Overall, 30% of high…

  • An Association Between Bullying Behaviors and Alcohol Use Among Middle School Students

    Open Access•Neta Peleg-Oren, Neta Peleg‐oren et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Early Adolescence•2010•Cited by: 12

Although a high prevalence of bullying behaviors among adolescents has been documented, little is known about the association between bullying behaviors and alcohol use among perpetrators or victims. This study used data from a representative two-stage cluster random sample of 44, 532 middle school adolescents in Florida. We found a high prevalence of bullying behaviors (30% physical, 52% verbal, 12% cyber). A higher proportion of students (21%) …

  • Prevalence and Risk Factors for HIV Among Sniffers, Short-Term Injectors, and Long-Term Injectors of Heroin

Dale D Chitwood, Mary Comerford et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•2003

The prevalence of HIV and associated risk behaviors were assessed among three groups of heroin users: long term injection drug users (LTIDUs), new injection drug users (NIDUs), and heroin sniffers (HSs) with no history of injection. HIV seroprevalence was similar among NIDUs (13.3%) and HSs (12.7%). LTIDUs had almost twice as high a level of HIV infection (24.7%). After including drug use and sex behavior variables in logistic regression models, …

  • High risk sexual behaviours among heroin sniffers who have no history of injection drug use

J Sánchez, José Javier Sánchez et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2002

The purpose of this paper is to assess sexual behaviours which place heroin sniffers (HSs) at high risk for HIV infection. A stratified network-based sample was used to recruit HSs who had no history of injection drug use was recruited from the streets of South Florida, USA. HSs displayed a high HIV seroprevalence rate of 12.1%; women (18.1%) were more likely than men (8.7%) to test positive for HIV. Both men and women HSs engaged in considerable…

  • First injection and current risk factors for HIV among new and long-term injection drug users

J Sánchez, José Javier Sánchez et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2000

The purpose of this paper is to estimate HIV seroprevalence and to examine the injection and sexual risk behaviours of a cohort of active new heroin injectors who have initiated injection within the past four years and to compare their risk behaviours with those of long-term heroin injectors who initiated injection prior to January 1, 1985. A stratified network-based sample was used to recruit injection drug users (IDUs) from the streets of Miami…

  • A Comparison of the Need for Health Care and Use of Health Care by Injection-Drug Users, Other Chronic Drug Users, and Nondrug Users

    Open Access•Dale D Chitwood, Duane C Mcbride et al.•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•1998•Cited by: 4•References: 30

This article compares the health care need and health care use of injection drug users, other chronic drug users, and nondrug users. Data from 1,330 non-Hispanic White, African American, and Hispanic/Latino men and women were analyzed to determine independent risk factors for two outcome variables: (a) need for health care treatment and (b) use of health care treatment. Ten independent demographic, health, and drug use variables were assessed in …

  • Risk factors for HIV-1 seroconversion among injection drug users

Dale D Chitwood, David Griffin et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1995•Cited by: 5•References: 28

OBJECTIVES. A nested case-control study was conducted in Miami, Fla, to determine risk factors associated with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) seroconversion among injection drug users. METHODS. The study identified 21 incident cases of HIV-1 infection and 76 unmatched controls from two longitudinal cohorts of injection drug users. One cohort consisted of individuals who originally had been recruited from treatment centers; a second c…

  • The donation and sale of blood by intravenous drug users

Dale D Chitwood, Joanne Page et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1991•Cited by: 1•References: 7

In spite of efforts to dissuade intravenous drug users (IVDUs) from donating or selling blood, some continue to do so. As part of a longitudinal study, 915 IVDUs in South Florida were interviewed concerning their history of donation or sale of blood and tested for antibodies to HIV-1 and HTLV-I/II. Approximately 17 percent had either donated or sold blood during 1985 through 1988; most contributors (80.4 percent) sold to commercial blood services…

  • HIV seropositivity of needles from shooting galleries in south Florida

Dale D Chitwood, Clyde B Mccoy et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1990•Cited by: 21•References: 3

Needle/syringe combinations were collected from three shooting galleries in South Florida and tested for the presence of antibodies to HIV-1. Fifteen of 148 needles (10.1 percent) tested positive for HIV-1 antibody. Seropositivity rates did not vary by the day of the week of collection, nor by shooting gallery from which they were collected. When the needle appeared to contain blood residue, 20.0 percent were positive versus 5.1 percent with no b…
