  • Cybercrime and Punishment

Open Access•Ye Hong, William S Neilson et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Legal Studies•2020

This paper models cybercrime by adding an active victim to the seminal Becker model of crime. The victim invests in security that may protect her from a cybercrime and, if the cybercrime is thwarted, generate evidence that can be used for prosecution. Successful crimes leave insufficient evidence for apprehension and conviction and, thus, cannot be punished. Results show that increased penalties for cybercriminals lead them to exert more effort a…

  • Value and outcome uncertainty as explanations for the WTA vs WTP disparity

William S Neilson, Michael McKee et al.•CHAPTER•Handbook on Experimental…•2013

This paper contributes to the widespread discussion of the sources of the divergence between WTA and WTP values. The theoretical and empirical investigations show that value and outcome uncertainty offer an explanation for this disparity. Given a set of hypotheses generated by the theory, the paper investigates the disparity using an induced-value experimental laboratory setting. The incentive-compatible Becker-DeGroot-Marshak mechanism is employ…

  • "Theoretical Advances Spurred by "Stubborn Facts

    Open Access•William S Neilson•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2011•References: 12

Economists have regarded behavioral economics as contributing evidence violating accepted theories. This paper contends that a second, perhaps more important, contribution is the new theory that has arisen to address these challenges. To illustrate, the paper examines how a single observed fact, cooperation in the finitely-repeated prisoners' dilemma, has led to extensions of the folk theorem as well as to new concepts including sequential equili…
