  • Understanding the differential effects on employment of a community wealth building programme in England

    Open Access•Tanith C Rose, Konstantinos Daras et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2025•References: 14

BACKGROUND: People-centred initiatives to create and retain local wealth, such as Community Wealth Building (CWB), have potential to stimulate regional economic regeneration that addresses economic inequalities by increasing the economic inclusion of more disadvantaged groups. Preston, a relatively deprived city in England, has implemented a CWB programme that has been associated with improvements in local wages and well-being. We estimated the e…

  • Navigating The Psychoanalytic Symbol

    Tom Goodwin•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2023•References: 4

Nicolas Abraham (1919-75) rethinks the symbol as the very fabric of being. The author examines how this notion challenges the limitations of Husserl’s phenomenology and its reliance on a transcendental ego that can apprehend hyletic data in its purity. For Abraham, the symbol is worldly and resonates with its emergence from intersubjective foundations to constitute subjectivity impurely as a Dyad. It is born from trauma, a cut that differentiates…

  • The Symbol

    Nicolas Abraham, Tom Goodwin•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2023

Notes1 “The Symbol: Or Beyond the Phenomenon” translates perhaps Nicolas Abraham’s most important early text “Le symbole: ou l’au-delà du phénomène” originally published in 1962 and collected in his posthumous 1978 collection L’Écorce et le noyau (Paris: Aubier Flammarion). In this translation, footnotes without attribution are from the original text. Where I have added notes to clarify more ambiguous terms or unfamiliar concepts in the translati…

  • Introducing Thalassa

    Nicolas Abraham, Tom Goodwin•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2020

The book that the French reader holds in his hands is one of the century's most fascinating and liberating. It does nothing less than instigate the psychoanalytic approach as a universal method of investigation that could complement the natural sciences, biology, palaeontology, medicine, or, pushing its insights far enough, even chemistry and physics. We find it difficult to believe that such an enterprise will be possible or what fruit it will bea…

  • Translating the Psychoanalysis of Origins

    Tom Goodwin•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2020•References: 6

Nicolas Abraham’s “Introducing Thalassa” contributed to the revival of Sàndor Ferenczi’s ideas in France from the 1960s and initiated a transformation in his own psychoanalytic thinking as the thalassal argument was brought into a new context. This article argues that Abraham’s work provides a pathway to not only remember, but also revitalise Ferenczi’s notion of trauma and its inscription in biological processes from events that have happened is…

  • When Are Caregivers More Likely to Offer Sugary Drinks and Snacks to Infants? A Qualitative Thematic Synthesis

Open Access•Deborah Moore, Deborah Anne Moore et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 51

Many children consume more sugar than is recommended, and caregivers often find it difficult to change this habit once established. This thematic synthesis aims to identify the "critical situations" where caregivers may be more likely to offer infants sugary drinks and snacks. This thematic synthesis is reported in accordance with the statement for enhancing transparency in reporting the synthesis of qualitative research (ENTREQ). Our confidence …

  • Why We Should Reject ‘Nudge

    Open Access•Tom Goodwin•ARTICLE•Politics•2012•Cited by: 32•References: 9

This article argues that the use of ‘nudge’ tactics in UK policymaking ought to be rejected. Nudge contravenes the coalition government's aspirations to promote ideas such as empowerment, freedom and fairness. Moreover, it is not an effective strategy for bringing about the kind of behavioural changes required to solve society's ‘big problems’ – problems around climate change and public health, for example. The article mines political theory in a…

  • Bellamy on Dirty Hands and Lesser Evils

Open Access•Stephen De Wijze, Stephen A De Wijze et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Politics…•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 9

This article offers a response to Alex Bellamy's article ‘Dirty Hands and Lesser Evils in the War on Terror’. It outlines deep errors in his claims about ‘dirty hands’ and ‘lesser evils’. Essentially, these errors result from his failure to grapple with the complexity of dirty hands theory, coupled with his uncritical acceptance that dirty hands scenarios are essentially defined as a clash between a public and private morality. Furthermore, we ar…
