The literature on race and property values is reviewed with special attention to problems of conceptualization, measurement, and analysis. Strategies in gathering and validating selling price data are reviewed, as are strategies in standardizing prices for “real value” in order to provide a benchmark against which to assess price changes. Evidence and argument designed to demonstrate that blacks suffer higher levels of personal disorganization than whites has not seriously attempted to assess the relative effects of racial status upon psychological state. Here two samples of blacks and whites are used to evaluate the relative effects of racial status on a measure of self-esteem and on a measure of psychological symptoms of stress. The object of this study is to assess the influence of different pedagogical and social dimensions of school environment on achievement of students while controlling relevant personal variables.
