Society’s compassion towards nonhuman animals used in experimentation has grown exponentially. This paper adopts critical discourse analysis to examine how the animal experimentation industry negotiates this societal moral response. To this end, the discourse of the largest animal experimentation interest group in Spain has been studied. Our findings show that the industry, as represented by this interest group, does not negotiate compassion with…
Tinder un-choosing. The six stages of mate discarding in a patriarchal technology
We analyse rejection experiences in mobile dating applications (MDA), in particular Tinder, based on the variables of gender and age. To do so, we conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with forty (40) heterosexual Tinder users (10 women aged 18–28 years, 11 women aged 40–60, 10 men aged 18–28, and 9 men aged 40–60). Results showed that rather than explicitly hostile experiences, users encounter a gamified soft-rejection technology where b…
Manufacturing ignorance
Despite the evidence concerning the substantial greenhouse gases emissions resulting from animal-based food production, climate policies and institutions around the world have barely made an issue of this link until very recently. To better understand this lack of attention, we focus on the discursive role of think tanks as prominent but under researched actors attempting to shape public policy. This contribution examines whether European think t…

Through the method of social network analysis, the main political actors and their relationships are mapped, as a strategy to characterize the connective action that preconfigures a collaborative and convergent activism, based on ethno-cultural, ecological-territ…

Audience Contradictions in the Negotiation of Controversial Cultural Media Content
This paper analyses how people negotiate representations of other cultures in the media, in particular those traits that can be considered controversial in the sense of generating strong opinions and opposing stances. A news story about an Egyptian television channel run by Egyptian women journalists wearing the niqab (Maria TV) was used to stimulate debate in four focus groups. Although most of the participants initially criticized the approach …
No, there is no room for you’

The Social Construction of Intercultural Communication
Through the Delphi method, we draw on experts in the field of interculturalism – and on our own previous Critical Discourse Analysis-based research – to critically examine media accounts of intercultural communication in Spain. We argue that understanding how the media portray intercultural communication from the point of view of experts is a vital research task, since the media and experts are key social actors who reproduce existing cultural me…

A Reflection on Identities, Culture Models and Power
We reflect on interrelationship patterns between cultures and identities, first focusing on what we mean by culture and then analysing four cultural models — monocultural, multicultural, intercultural and transcultural and their impact on identity construction. The Notion of Violence in Television Fiction
In this paper we analyse child viewers’ interpretation of television violence shown in television programmes specifically aimed at children. The justification for this work is based on the research that considers that more theoretical and empirical studies need to be carried out on the conceptualisation of violence, and about how much violence is legitimised and through what mechanisms such legitimacy is constructed. It is aimed at providing a no…
