  • Corruption in Customs

Open Access•Cyril Chalendard, Ana M Fernandes et al.•BOOK•2021

This paper presents a new methodology to detect corruption in customs and applies it to Madagascar's main port. Manipulation of assignment of import declarations to inspectors is identified by measuring deviations from random assignment prescribed by official rules. Deviant declarations are more at risk of tax evasion, yet less likely to be deemed fraudulent by inspectors, who also clear them faster. An intervention in which inspector assignment …

  • Cross-Border Trade, Insecurity and the Role of Customs: Some Lessons from Six Field Studies in (Post-)Conflict Regions

    Open Access•Thomas Cantens, Gaël Raballand et al.•ARTICLE•SSRN Electronic Journal•2017•Cited by: 7•References: 7

  • Central Asia: The New Silk Road Initiative’s questionable economic rationality

Sébastien Peyrouse, Gaël Raballand•ARTICLE•Eurasian Geography and Economics•2015•Cited by: 7•References: 2

This paper explores how the New Silk Road Initiative, which is presented as a concept founded on economic rationality, tends to offer an ideological perspective on transport and trade for the Central Asian region. The New Silk Road Initiative advocates for more transport infrastructure in Central Asia without tackling the most significant barriers to trade: production patterns, widespread corruption, and poor management practices at borders

  • Introduction: Borders, Informality, International Trade and Customs

Thomas Cantens, Robert Ireland et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Borderlands Studies•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 7

This special section deals with cross-border in goods. Trading goods is an original human activity that precedes borders (Renfrew 1969). With rise of nation-states with demarcated political boundaries, that crosses borders became regulated by government institutions such as Customs, with tariffs, quotas, or outright prohibitions. While borders are perhaps not quite the dead, fixed, undialectical, immobile (Foucault 1970, 70), they are a formal st…

    Gaël Raballand•ARTICLE•Études•2012•Cited by: 1

  • Entrepôt for Chinese Consumer Goods in Central Asia: The Puzzle of Re-exports through Kyrgyz Bazaars

Bartlomiej Kaminski, Gaël Raballand•ARTICLE•Eurasian Geography and Economics•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Relying on mirror foreign trade statistics and their reconciliation with official data on balance of payments, two economists demonstrate the important role of bazaars as major conduits of trade in Central Asia, and particularly of Kyrgyz bazaars for the entry of Chinese consumer goods into the region. The authors estimate that in recent years up to three quarters of the goods imported by Kyrgyzstan have been unofficially re-exported to other Cen…

    Edmond Mjekiqi, Gaël Raballand•ARTICLE•Afrique contemporaine•2009

    Gaël Raballand, Thomas Cantens•ARTICLE•Afrique contemporaine•2009

  • Performance, Representation and the Economics of Border Control in Uzbekistan

Nick Megoran, Gaël Raballand et al.•ARTICLE•Geopolitics•2005•Cited by: 13•References: 17

This article explores the contradictions and intersections between the performative and economic aspects of state boundary control. From 1999 onwards, Uzbekistan's formal trade with its neighbours declined dramatically, whilst cross-border smuggling mushroomed. This article examines these developments, using both an economic analysis, and a theoretical approach to the study of international boundaries derived from political geography, anthropolog…
