Beyond Painting or Writing: Frank tienne's Poetic Quest
Franketienne is known first and foremost as writer. It is his paintings, however, that this article examines, for they are the most relevant to understanding the poetics of what Franketienne calls the «spirale», and also to explaining how these works - produced in the wake of his literary experiences linked partly to the French «nouveau roman» - enrich and transform his writing with L'oiseau schizophone (1993) and more radically with H'Eros-Chime…

Tragic Narratives: The Novels of Haitian Tradition
For Haitian critics, the "true Haitian novel" is born in 1901 with the publication by Ollendorff in Paris of Frédéric Marcelin's Thémistocle-Epaminondas Labasterre, subtitled "petit récit hatien" (short Haitian narrative). Marcelin's novel breaks with the "exoticism" of Haitian novelists of the 19th century (Bergeaud, Delorme, Janvier) to impose a text which wants to be "national," in other words a "realistic portrayal of mores, customs, family t…

Haitian Writers in Exile: A Survey of North America
Some clarification is necessary before we begin in order not to mislead. This study is primarily exploratory and documentary. Exploratory because it forms the basis for a larger work whose ideas need to be synthesized and more closely scrutinized.1 Informative since it is essentially an inventory (an analytical one naturally) of novels and their authors who are Haitian nationals but who have lived and still live in North America. This presentatio…
