Sound Acts, Part 2: Copresen(t/c)ing Vibration
Dear readers, if you are just tuning in to this ongoing jam session, we invite you to get (un)settled and listen to the frequencies tapped herein. You can always replay our opening salvo to sound and performance studies in Sound Acts, Part I or immerse yourself in the melodic lines of argument put forth in this second issue
Towards a Characterization of Background Music Audibility in Broadcasted TV
In audiovisual contexts, different conventions determine the level at which background music is mixed into the final program, and sometimes, the mix renders the music to be practically or totally inaudible. From a perceptual point of view, the audibility of music is subject to auditory masking by other aural stimuli such as voice or additional sounds (e.g., applause, laughter, horns), and is also influenced by the visual content that accompanies …

Nuyorican Feminist Performance: From the Café to Hip Hop Theater
The Nuyorican Poets Café has for the past forty years provided a space for multicultural artistic expression and a platform for the articulation of Puerto Rican and black cultural politics. The Café's performances—poetry, music, hip hop, comedy, and drama—have been studied in detail, but until now, little attention has been paid to the voices of its women artists. Through archival research and interview, Nuyorican Feminist Performance examines th…
Drum rhythm spaces: From polyphonic similarity to generative maps
This paper reports on the design and evaluation of drum rhythm spaces as interactive bi-dimensional maps used for the visualisation, retrieval and generation of drum patterns. We carry out two experiments exploring human processing of polyphonic drum patterns concluding with a list of descriptors that significantly influence similarity sensations. These features are used to build spaces based on drum pattern collections, where patterns are organi…

Computational Ethnomusicology: Perspectives and challenges
Since the beginning of Music Information Retrieval (MIR) as a field, most of its models and technologies have been developed for mainstream popular music in the so-called ‘Western’ tradition. Over
She Wears the Masks: Bluefacing in Nilaja Sun's Black and Blue and La Nubia Latina
This article examines how Nilaja Sun explicitly employs the minstrelsy traditions of blackface to push the conceptual limits of racial identity, and expand the nodes of intersection within diasporic identities. The act of bluing up, as opposed to blacking up, is Sun's way of provoking her audience to think more expansively about the performance of racialized identity outside of black and Latino paradigms, and toward a more complicated and not-cle…
Detecting Solo Phrases in Music Using Spectral and Pitch-related Descriptors
In this paper we present an algorithm for segmenting musical audio data. Our aim is to identify solo instrument phrases in polyphonic music. We extract relevant features from the audio to be input into our algorithm. A large corpus of audio descriptors was tested for its ability to discriminate between solo and non-solo sections, which resulted in a subset of five best features. We derived a two-stage algorithm that first creates a set of boundar…
Statistical Analysis of Chroma Features in Western Music Predicts Human Judgments of Tonality
Motivated by evidence that image source statistics predict the response properties of several visual perception aspects, we provide an empirical analysis of the relation between chroma statistics and human judgments of tonality. To accomplish this, a statistical analysis method based on chroma feature covariance is proposed. It makes use of a large collection of western music to build a tonal profile. The obtained profile is compared to alternati…
Automatic Classification of Musical Instrument Sounds
We present an exhaustive review of research on automatic classification of sounds from musical instruments. Two different but complementary approaches are examined, the perceptual approach and the taxonomic approach. The former is targeted to derive perceptual similarity functions in order to use them for timbre clustering and for searching and retrieving sounds by timbral similarity. The latter is targeted to derive indexes for labeling sounds a…

Batch Uptake of Lysozyme: Effect of Solution Viscosity and Mass Transfer on Adsorption
In this study, solid-phase adsorption by macroporous and hyper-diffusive resins was investigated in a batch uptake adsorption system to quantify solid-phase diffusion rates as a function of bulk phase viscosity. The performance of chromatographic resins used for adsorption of proteins is dependent on several factors including solid and liquid-phase diffusivity, boundary layer mass transfer, and intraparticle mass transfer effects. Understanding t…
