Reclaiming public space as commons: Learning from Latin American movements
The text proposes to understand public space as capable of becoming a common space when the rules of its governance challenge those who own the space, not only to appropriate it, but to open it up for everyone's use. This possibility is linked to a reinvention of collaboration and a way of exercising "commoning

Life after the squares: Reflections on the consequences of the Occupy movements
This is a roundtable with reflections on Tahrir Square, Egypt; Syntagma Square, Greece; Rossio Square, Portugal; 15-M Puerta del Sol, Spain; Gezi Park, Turkey; and Occupy Wall Street, USA. Five years on from the birth of the movements of the streets and the squares in Tahrir Square, what has changed? Common Space: The City as Commons
Space is both a product and a prerequisite of social relations, it has the potential to block and encourage certain forms of encounter. InCommon Space, activist and architect Stavros Stavrides calls for us to conceive of space-as-commons – first, to think beyond the notions of public and private space, and then to understand common space not only as space that is governed by all and remains open to all, but that explicitly expresses, encourages a…
Emerging common spaces as a challenge to the city of crisis
This paper explores potential links between the project of emancipating autonomy and urban commoning by tracing the development of experiences connected to the creation of common spaces in crisis-ridden Athens. It is maintained that for commoning to remain an active force against social and urban enclosures, commoning has to remain ‘infectious’ and to expand by overspilling the boundaries of any defined community. Threshold spatiality shapes comm…
Contested Urban Rhythms: From the Industrial City to the Post-Industrial Urban Archipelago
In industrial societies, dominant mechanic rhythmicalities were treated by critical thinkers and artists as forces of dehumanization and alienation. Organic rhythmicalities (bodily or cosmic ones) were alternatively explored in an effort to create a possible harmonious synthesis of nature and machine civilization. Rehumanizing the city-machine has, however, ceased to be a meaningful venture in post-industrial societies. Contemporary post-industri…
Squares in Movement
What has been called the squares movement is characterized by practices of commoning that reinvent public space as commons. People in the recent square occupations were not only demanding justice and direct democracy but were also creating ad hoc new forms of solidarity and egalitarian organization. Focusing especially on the Syntagma Square occupation in Athens, this essay explores the importance of a decentralization-recentralization dialectics…
"Espacialidades De Empancipación Y La "Ciudad De Umbrales
