  • Familiarity-based splits in the grammar of toponyms

Tilo Stolz, Thomas Stolz•ARTICLE•Language Typology and Universals•2025

This paper argues for considering familiarity a candidate for the status of parameter in the domain of the Grammar of Names. The evidence in support of this claim is drawn from the Special Toponymic Grammar of twelve genealogically, typologically, and geographically different languages. It is shown that place names of the same class are frequently subject to a division into two subcategories, namely, on the one hand, place names that are familiar…

  • Grammatical name marking in Chamorro

Tilo Stolz, Thomas Stolz et al.•ARTICLE•Language Typology and Universals•2024

Chamorro illustrates how Special Onymic Grammar can be shaped in a given language. It is shown that the rules that determine the morphosyntactic behaviour of common nouns cannot be generalized over onyms. Anthroponyms and toponyms differ markedly from common nouns within the NP and beyond. In addition, there are also structural differences that separate anthroponyms from toponyms so that it makes sense to speak of Special Anthroponymic Grammar as…

  • The naked truth about the Chamorro dual

Tilo Stolz, Thomas Stolz•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2019

It is argued that the traditional belief that the formal expression of the dual in Chamorro is restricted to intransitivity / low transitivity is inadequate since it precludes the possibility of accounting constructions in which the dual is also expressed in combination with transitive verbs. In the empirical part of the study, evidence of the recurrent violations of the intransitivity-based restrictions is discussed. It is shown that the dual is…

  • On classifiers and their absence in Classical and Colonial Nahuatl

Tilo Stolz, Thomas Stolz•ARTICLE•Language Typology and Universals•2018

This paper addresses the issue of the reported optional character of numeral classifiers in Classical and Colonial Nahuatl. On the basis of the qualitative assessment of the co-occurrence of numerals with classifiers or zero in constructions which serve the purpose of quantifying or ordinally ranking NPs, the optionality hypothesis is assessed. The question is raised whether or not the presence and absence of classifiers is arbitrary or triggered…

Tilo Stolz, Thomas Stolz et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of the…•2016

The article aims at demonstrating that toponymy in colonial and postcolonial settings is a promising area for linguistically-informed research. On the basis of evidence drawn from erstwhile colonies of France (with a focus on Senegal) and Spain (with a focus on the Western Sahara) it is shown that, on the Atlantic coast of West Africa, the processes of naming and renaming places are conditioned by an intricate network of mostly social forces. The…

  • When some dots turn a different color: Thoughts on how (not) to determine whether or not reduplication is universal

Tilo Stolz, Thomas Stolz et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2015

This paper examines some of the problems which arise in connection with the question of whether or not reduplication is a language universal. The point of departure of the study is Moravcsik’s (1978) seminal paper on reduplicative constructions in cross-linguistic perspective. In the main body of the paper, the picture of the geo-linguistic distribution of reduplication that is painted in the World Atlas of Language Structures (Haspelmath et al. …

This chapter provides the first comprehensive account of the inflectional morphology of the Austronesian language Chamorro. It aims at clarifying a number of controversial issues such as the morphological status of the person markers (prefixes vs. proclitics) in the perfective aspect. The pros and cons of previous alternative analyses are taken into account. The rules which determine the use of allomorphs are spelt out and discussed in some detai…

  • Total Reduplication: The Areal Linguistics of a Potential Universal

Tilo Stolz, Thomas Stolz et al.•BOOK•Total Reduplication•2011

Total reduplication is a widely common phenomenon in human languages. Nevertheless, it has not gained sufficient attention among linguists. This monograph demonstrates that the comparative study of total reduplication challenges the traditional notion of linguistic universal. Contrary to the belief that total reduplication is almost completely unknown in the linguistic landscape of Europe, it is shown that a sizable group of European languages ma…

  • Kolonialzeitliche Sprachforschung: Die Beschreibung afrikanischer und ozeanischer Sprachen zur Zeit der deutschen Kolonialherrschaft

Tilo Stolz, Thomas Stolz et al.•BOOK•Kolonialzeitliche Sprachforschung•2011

This edited volume highlights various aspects of a hitherto neglected research topic. During the relatively short period of German colonialism (1884-1918/20) in Africa, China and Oceania, literally hundreds of texts were produced which treat of the indigenous languages of the German colonial empire. Many of these texts have never appeared in print. The contributions are indicative of the wealth of interesting insights (the historiography of) ling…

  • With(out): On the markedness relation between comitatives/instrumentals and abessives

Tilo Stolz, Thomas Stolz et al.•ARTICLE•WORD•2007•References: 27

Over the last sixty years, comitatives and instrumentals have attracted the attention of many linguists of different theoretical convictions. In contrast, their logical negative counterpart, the abessive, constitutes still largely unexplored territory, cross-linguistically. In the very few studies that mention it, the abessive is often depicted as the negated comitative/instrumental which, together with the comitative/ instrumental itself, forms …

This is the first book-length functional-typologically inspired crosslinguistic study of comitatives and related categories such as the instrumental. On the basis of data drawn from 400 languages world-wide (covering all major phyla and areas), the authors test and revise a variety of general linguistic hypotheses about the grammar and cognitive foundations of comitatives. Three types of languages are identified according to the morphological tre…

  • Pronominal possession in Faroese and the parameters of alienability/inalienability

Tilo Stolz, Thomas Stolz et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2001

The paper seeks to demonstrate that grammatically relevant distinctions of alienable vs. inalienable possession are not completely uncommon in modern Indo-European languages of Europe. A detailed analysis of pronominal attributive possession in presentday Faroese shows that there is a clearly defined system at work determined by semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic factors. The interplay of these factors is described on the basis of a corpus analys…

    Open Access•Tilo Stolz, Thomas Stolz•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2001•Cited by: 4•References: 2

Comitatives and instrumentals are characterized by markedly different behavior as to their combinability with additional functions. This is especially the case with possession and locative: normally, possession is compatible with comitative as an additional function, whereas the instrumental does not enter combinations with possession easily. Similarly, instrumentals display a propensity to associate with additional locative functions from which …
