Educational inequalities are associated with distinct metabolomic and gut microbiome patterns in adults
Educational attainment is a well-established determinant of health inequalities and non-communicable diseases. While social gradients in health are consistently observed, the biological mechanisms through which educational disadvantage becomes embedded in human physiology remain insufficiently understood. We analyzed baseline data from 1773 adults in the population-based Food Chain Plus (FoCus) cohort. Phenotype, lifestyle, and nutrition were int…
Changes in Anxiety Levels One Year After the October 7th, 2023, Hamas Attack in Patients with Opioid Use Disorder Receiving Methadone Maintenance Treatment
Pregabalin Misuse
We examined motives for pregabalin misuse and the relation with knowledge on its risks among patients receiving MMT. A questionnaire was used to assess patients' knowledge before and after an explanatory session. Responses were either "never-use" or "ever-use" (past, occasional, chronic). Pregabalin in urine was tested during 1 month, 4 months before, and 24 months after the explanatory session. Of 231 participants, 72 (31.2%) responded "ever-use…
The Relation between Changes in Vitamin D and Vitamin B12 Levels, Body Mass Index and Outcome in Methadone Maintenance Treatment Patients
Patients' Body Mass Index (BMI) increase during methadone maintenance treatment (MMT), and both Vitamins D and B12 deficiencies may be associated with BMI. We studied the relations between BMI, these vitamins and treatment outcome in patients with opioid use disorder receiving MMT. Vitamin B12 levels were available for 272 patients and Vitamin D levels were available for 260 patients. Of those 112 and 80 respectively had two measures (at admissio…

Linking pre-existing biorepositories for medical research
The significance of human biorepositories for modern medical research, particularly for comprehensive population-based genetic analyses, is constantly growing. While large and centralized institutions are usually considered best suited to meet the increasing demand for high-quality "biobanks," most medical research institutions still host rather heterogeneous and fragmented biobanking activities, undertaken by clinical departments with oftentimes…
Sexual Abuse and its Relation to Chronic Pain among Women from a Methadone Maintenance Clinic versus a Sexual Abuse Treatment Center
To determine the effect of sexual abuse history on chronic pain and its relation to opioid addiction and methadone maintenance treatment (MMT), we studied current women MMT patients, and women patients from a sexual abuse treatment center with no history of opioid addiction. Questionnaires included Chronic Pain, Chronic Severe Pain, the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale, the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES), and the Structured Interview f…
Characteristics and Outcome of Minority Group Patients in Methadone Maintenance Treatment
Minority status is associated with mental and physical morbidity, substance dependence, and poor outcomes. To compare characteristics and treatment outcomes between patients from two minority groups in Israel (Christians and Muslims) and patients from the majority population (Jews) in methadone maintenance treatment (MMT), we prospectively studied all patients admitted to our clinic between 1993 and 2012 and followed up until 2013; 655 Jews, 67 C…
The Relationship Between Vulnerable Attachment Style, Psychopathology, Drug Abuse, and Retention in Treatment Among Methadone Maintenance Treatment Patients
The relationship between vulnerable attachment style, psychopathology, drug abuse, and retention in treatment among patients in methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) was examined by the Vulnerable Attachment Style Questionnaire (VASQ), the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90), and drug abuse urine tests. After six years, retention in treatment and repeated urine test results were studied. Patients with vulnerable attachment style (a high VASQ score) had…
Pathological gambling in methadone maintenance clinics where gambling is legal versus illegal
Lifetime potential and probable pathological gambling (PG) were assessed using the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) questionnaire. The prevalence between patients in methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) in Tel Aviv (Israel, gambling is illegal) and MMT patients in Las Vegas (NV, USA, gambling is legal) was compared. Urine toxicology and substance use was assessed as well. PG at MMT admission was higher in Tel Aviv (48/178, 27%) than in Las Vega…
Sense of Coherence as a Stable Predictor for Methadone Maintenance Treatment (MMT) Outcome
We studied stability of sense of coherence (SOC) over time and in relation to the outcomes of former heroin addicts in MMT. Between September of 2003 and April of 2006, all 90 newly admitted patients to a MMT clinic in Tel Aviv were studied and followed up for one year. A SOC (inner resources) questionnaire was done at baseline and after one year. Use of opiates, cocaine, benzodiazepines, cannabis and amphetamines in the 13 months after admission…
Migration, traumatic bereavement and transcultural aspects of psychological healing
Post‐traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), grief and bereavement may be manifested in a variety of ways in different populations and cultures. Following is the description of an Ethiopian immigrant woman from the county of Begameder whose baby died during the long exodus from Ethiopia and who, because of the different environmental conditions in ‘the new land’, could not undergo traditional purification rituals. Subsequently she suffered various cult…
