Party systems politicization and citizens’ political awareness: Assessing the relationship on conflict over EU integration
"Populism and affective polarization in the times of "Giorgia: An assessment of the effect on European voting
Despite the attention paid by comparative studies to the themes of populism and affective polarization (AP), the connections between these two concepts remain under-investigated. Both of them describe the conflict between ingroup (“us”) and outgroup (“them”) individuals. Nonetheless, although in the first case, the conflict pits the people against the elite, in the second case conflict occurs between party supporters and other parties (e.g., lead…
War as external cause: Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the theorising of European integration and EU politics, and the EU’s arduous formation in foreign and security policy
The dark side of simultaneous elections. The case of Sicily in 2022 Italian national elections
Instruments of “electoral engineering” such as compulsory voting, incentives and simultaneous multi-level voting, have become pretty common in contemporary democracies, especially in areas with low turnout rates. Simultaneous elections – i.e. the practice of establishing an election day when different governments (usually at local and national level, or including referendums) are elected – implies a reduction of costs for the institutions and inc…
Individual sources of support for the EU and transnational cleavage beliefs: Assessing the Relationship
Euroscepticism and Populism in Italy Among Party Elites and the Public
The recent history of European politics has been characterised by the mounting phenomena of populism and Euroscepticism. Some recent analyses discuss the possible convergence between the two, exemplified, above all, by the increased success of Eurosceptic and populist parties. Conceptually and historically, Euroscepticism and populism are two distinct ideological realms. To what extent do they develop in parallel or converge, both at the elite an…
Think European, act local: Do Italians think of Europe when they vote in national elections
In many respects, Italy – a founding member of the EU and once one of its most pro-European countries – may well represent today a privileged observation point for the study of the electoral behaviour of Eurosceptic voters. In the article, we look for evidence about a Eurosceptical match between the demand and the supply sides of the Italian electoral process. For this purpose, through use of data collected by the Itanes 2018 national election su…
The Role of Public Opinion in EU Integration: Assessing the Relationship between Elites and the Public during the Refugee Crisis
While the EU was still recovering from the Great Recession, the refugee crisis polarized and mobilized national and European political spaces, inducing governments to revise their immigration policies. Scholars are presently engaged in academic debate over whether these revisions can be explained by reference to grand theories of European integration. In this context, we ask the following questions. If public opinion favoured ‘constraining’ EU in…
"Instrumental explanations of attitudes towards immigrants during the "refugee crisis: Evidence from Italy
The recent history of immigration flows shows recurrent massive waves of arrivals that put under great stress both policies and politics within national systems, due to rising politicization and public concern. Despite a great amount of analyses on the origins of attitudes towards immigrants and immigration, the relationships with flow peaks need still more observations, especially with a focus on natives' interests. Do self and sociotropic- inte…
Immigration, security and the economy: Who should bear the burden of global crises? Burden-sharing and citizens’ support for EU integration in Italy
This article aims to explore the conditions under which Italian citizens would be ready to support a greater role for the EU in matters currently subject to the authority of its member states. We examine how citizens perceive the role of the EU in managing the currently pressing problems induced by the most recent crises. Through the analysis of original data collected as part of the EUENGAGE survey of public opinion in 2016, we show that the dis…
Political elites and immigration in Italy: Party competition, polarization and new cleavages
The massive wave of migration that has affected Europe since 2015 has placed European and national institutions under considerable strain, with significant implications for both EU integration and for politics within the member states. Italy, one of the first points of access for immigrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea, provides the basis for a case study showing how and why the immigration crisis has affected elitesʼ and partiesʼ positions on …
Citizens, immigration and the EU as a shield
In recent years, the number of immigrants reaching the EU has grown dramatically. The migration crisis and its political repercussions have been felt with different intensity across Europe. In this critical situation, EU-level coordination has proved problematic due to the nested interests of the member states. This article addresses the problem of public support for an integrated EU immigration policy. Using data from the EUENGAGE project, we ex…
Targeting the government in the referendum: The aborted 2016 Italian constitutional reform
This study investigates the factors explaining voting in the 2016 Italian referendum on constitutional reform. As we show through voting alignments within the Parliament and key aspects of the electoral campaign, this was a case where the government took the leadership of the entire referendum process, transforming it into a plebiscite. Within this context, we hypothesize that key elements explaining voting choices follow a government-support vs.…
Debating Europe, transforming identities: Assessing the Impact of Deliberative Poll Treatment on Identity
Although there is a considerable amount of talk about transformative power of deliberation on identity, the debate in literature remains highly theoretical in underlying the benefits of deliberative model for EU Integration. So far, little empirical evidence is available on the actual impact of deliberation. Can deliberation enhance European identity? We specifically address this question by using deliberative polling quasi-experiment that involv…

Garnier's Historical Sources in Les Juifves
Robert Garnier's "Les Juifves" (1583) is generally considered to be the crown jewel of the French Renaissance stage. At the close of his prefatory "Argument" to the play, Garnier obligingly furnishes the historical sources from which he has taken the story of the sufferings of Zedekiah and his family. However, the bibliographic information which the tragedian supplies in his "Argument" contains at least one error with respect to the Bible, and a …

The Tragic History of la Pucelle of Domrémy, Otherwise Known as the Maid of Orléans
La Théorie de la «verge de Dieu» dans les tragédies religieuses d’André de Rivaudeau et de Robert Garnier
In the sixteenth century, writers of both confessions often had recourse to the Old Testament notion of the "rod of God" in order to account for the hand which the wicked had in the evil perpetrated upon their co-religionists. This study proposes to show that the religious tragedies of Rivaudeau and Garnier both drew inspiration from Synesius of Cyrene's doctrine concerning the persecution of the faithful. According to this Greek Father, the divi…
