“Conversing With a Sheet of White Paper”
Vygotsky remarks that the child who faces the written word must “converse with a white sheet of paper, with an imaginary or conceptualized interlocutor” (1934/1987, p. 202). This can be a challenge in literacy-based schooling. This article examines ways in which Indigenous teachers and students draw on diverse language repertoires while deciphering, writing, and translating texts in multilingual educational spaces. Drawing on Bakhtin's theory of speech genres, it approaches classroom discourse as a composite genre that reflects the history of teaching in each locality.
