Derek Walcott’s Painters
First book devoted to Derek Walcott’s lifelong engagement with the Atlantic visual arts Bringing together local, Atlantic and global dimensions and putting in dialogue and contextualising Walcott’s work with the works of specific artists, it retraces Walcott’s unique, empowering, but utterly neglected ‘art history’ Brings to the fore the importance and reverberations of interdisciplinary dialogues in the Atlantic world and in decolonising discour…

Not walled facts, their essence”
Life writing — a genre which goes beyond traditional biography, includes both fact and fiction, and is concerned with either entire lives or days-in-the-lives of individuals, communities, objects, or institutions — has always played an important role in Derek Walcott’s work. This body of work reaches from Another Life (1973),Walcott’s autobiography in verse, to his last play O Starry Starry Night (2014), where he re-imagines Paul Gauguin and Vinc…
Morning, Paramin
In Morning, Paramin (2016), 51 new poems by Derek Walcott are in dialogue with 51 paintings by Peter Doig. Walcott, also an accomplished painter, has often engaged with the visual arts, but this is the first volume in which every poem "cor-responds" to a painting, offering unique opportunities to examine Walcott's ekphrastic practices and the way in which they might offer alternatives to current paradigms. Rejecting the paradigm of a paragonal st…

Audubon, Another Vision
In Derek Walcott's "White Egrets" (2010) the titular birds play a central role in the conversation that the poet opens up with the ornithological artist John James Audubon. Audubon's work is the fruit of complex negotiations between life and death, humans and animals, real presences and emblems. Walcott's examination of these negotiations enables him to reconsider Audubon's poetics and ethics of representation whilst rearticulating his own. Walco…
La carne repta entre Dajabón y Juana Méndez”
on 23 September 2013, the Dominican Constitutional Court ruled that the Dominican government had the right to review all birth registries from 1929 to identify people who had been (allegedly) wrongly registered as Dominican citizens. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights concluded that this ruling arbitrarily deprived thousands of people of their nationality, in violation of their right to juridical personality; it also observed that the …

Hispaniola after the Earthquake
Isla Abierta' or 'Isla Cerrada
Border relations on Hispaniola have always been characterised by contradictory dynamics. After the 2012 earthquake some hoped that the catastrophe could signpost the beginning of better border relations. Well before the earthquake, the artist David Pérez a.k.a. Karmadavis had urged the inhabitants of the island to consider Hispaniola as an isla abierta (open island) where one could develop a national identity in relation with and not in oppositio…

Households and Income
This paper discusses the ageing process in Brazil and Colombia according to gender and socioeconomic inequalities. The ageing process is related to reforms in social policies in each country. Reforms in the pension systems show contrasting results for the family structure and income. In Brazil, the extension of pensions to rural and informal workers leads to empowering poorer elderly women and men in economic and domestic relationships. Universal…
The Flight of the Vernacular
In this book, Dante, Seamus Heaney and Derek Walcott engage in an eloquent and meaningful conversation. Dante’s capacity for being faithful to the collective historical experience and true to the recognitions of the emerging self, the permanent immediacy of his poetry, the healthy state of his language, which is so close to the object that the two are identified, and his adamant refusal to get lost in the wide and open sea of abstraction – all th…
