Migration drivers and migration choice: Interrogating responses to migration and development interventions in West Africa

Recent contributions have considered migration choice as step-wise in nature, involving a separation between 'aspiration' and 'ability' to migrate, whilst stressing a range of non-economic factors that influence migration choices. But such nuances have not prevented the emergence of a significant area of public policy that …
The Struggle Against the Ebola Epidemics in Guinea, and the Hardships Related With Professional and Community-Based Identities
This article describes the interactions among different social actors involved in the fight against the Ebola epidemic in Guinea, focusing on their professional and community identities. It shows how the epidemic has contributed to create new identities, grouped into two different semantic fields: the “Ebola people” and the “communities”, but also new professional identities. In the theoretical framework of Olivier de Sardan’s socio-anthropology …
This article demonstrates how Guinean teachers, facing difficult working and living conditions, develop strategies in order to improve their situation. We consider teachers as social actors endowed with agency, who do not rely only on the State, but rather on other actors of the educational field, such as pupils, parents, or founders of private schools. An analysis of teacher’s activities taking place beside their official mission (even though th…
