Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Diabetes Prevention Outcomes
Background: To achieve health equity, interventions should yield similar effectiveness across all patient subgroups. However, the adoption of diabetes prevention strategies and successful weight loss in "real-world" Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) translational studies have varied by race and ethnicity. We examined racial and ethnic differences in diabetes prevention outcomes among study participants from the Prediabetes Informed Decisions and …
Divergent agricultural development pathways across farm and landscape scales in Europe
Current agricultural practices in Europe are increasingly aggravating societal and environmental safety concerns. This creates social and regulatory pressures on farmers, which can lead to declining material and social status of farmers, farmer discontent, and anti-regulation protests. These tensions are rooted in conflicting value systems for agricultural development, which can range from productivist pathways (i.e. valuing production above all …

Visibility & support for first generation college graduates in medicine
Of Being a First Generation (First Gen) college graduate is an important intersectionality which impacts the lens through which First Gen students learn to become physicians. In this Perspective, we define the First Gen identity and review some of the salient First Gen literature as it applies to the medical school experience. We discuss the conception, design and execution of First Gen initiatives and program development at our medical school as…
Electronic Health Literacy among Linguistically Diverse Patients in the Los Angeles County Safety Net Health System
In this sample of patients from a diverse safety net population, perceived skills and confidence in engaging with electronic health systems were low, particularly among LEP Spanish-speakers, despite moderate levels of electronic health literacy. More studies are needed among diverse patient populations to better assess eHealth literacy and patients' digital readiness, and to examine how these patient metrics directly impact telehealth utilization
Reducing Emergency Department Visits Among Patients With Diabetes by Embedding Clinical Pharmacists in the Primary Care Teams
BACKGROUND: Pharmacists are effective at improving control of cardiovascular risk factors, but it less clear whether these improvements translate into less emergency department (ED) use and fewer hospitalizations. The UCMyRx program embed pharmacists in primary care. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine if the integration of pharmacists into primary care was associated with lower ED and hospital use for patients with diabetes. DE…

Challenges and innovations for improving the sustainability of European agroforestry systems of high nature and cultural value
To what extent does the European common agricultural policy affect key landscape determinants of biodiversity
Cross-site analysis of perceived ecosystem service benefits in multifunctional landscapes
Rural development policies in many Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) member countries promote sustainable landscape management with the intention of providing multiple ecosystem services (ES). Yet, it remains unclear which ES benefits are perceived in different landscapes and by different people. We present an assessment of ES benefits perceived and mapped by residents (n = 2,301) across 13 multifunctional (deep rural …
Agroforestry creates carbon sinks whilst enhancing the environment in agricultural landscapes in Europe
Agroforestry, relative to conventional agriculture, contributes significantly to carbon sequestration, increases a range of regulating ecosystem services, and enhances biodiversity. Using a transdisciplinary approach, we combined scientific and technical knowledge to evaluate nine environmental pressures in terms of ecosystem services in European farmland and assessed the carbon storage potential of suitable agroforestry systems, proposed by regi…

Migration, Health Care Behaviors, and Primary Care for Rural Latinos with Diabetes
Perceptions from Latino and African American Older Adults about Biological Markers in Research
Although older adult minorities face disparities in health and health care, they continue to be underrepresented in health research. Studies with biological markers of health often lack representation of older minority adults. The purpose of this study was to describe perceptions of biomarkers among ethnic minority seniors who might participate in studies of biological markers of health and to document barriers and facilitators to acceptance of b…
Latinos With Diabetes and Food Insecurity in an Agricultural Community
BACKGROUND: Latinos from agricultural communities have a high prevalence of food insecurity and are at increased risk of obesity and diabetes, yet little is known about the associations between food insecurity and diabetes outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between food insecurity and diabetes outcomes among rural Latinos. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey with medical chart abstraction of 250 Latinos with diabetes. Primary outcomes a…
Impact of Interpreters on the Receipt of New Prescription Medication Information Among Spanish-Speaking Latinos
BACKGROUND: For Latinos, limited English proficiency (LEP) is a barrier to receiving important information about a new medication prescription. Access to interpreters may impact the receipt of important medication-related information. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between interpreter use and reports of new prescription medication advice among Latinos with LEP. METHODS: We examined cross-sectional survey data from 1590 Latino adults with L…
