L'école de Brentano et la réalité sociale
Why does it matter to individuate the senses
How do we individuate the senses, what exactly do we do when we do so, and why does it matter? In the following article, I propose a general answer to these related questions based on Franz Brentano's views on the senses. After a short survey of various answers offered in the recent literature on the senses, I distinguish between two major ways of answering this question, causally and descriptively, arguing that only answers giving priority to de…
Descriptive psychology
What does it mean for a thought, idea, belief, or wish to be about something? And what do we mean when we say that we are aware of thinking, presenting, believing, or wishing when we do? Much of the philosophy of mind of the 20th and 21st centuries has focused on these two questions. Franz Brentano and Austrian Philosophy
The book discusses Franz Brentanos impact on Austrian philosophy. It contains both a critical reassessment of Brentanos place in the development of Austrian philosophy at the turn of the 20th century and a reevaluation of the impact and significance of his philosophy of mind or descriptive psychology which was Brentano's most important contribution to contemporary philosophy and to the philosophy in Vienna. In addition, the relation between Brent…
Twardowski on Signs and Products
Twardowski's conception of presentations, signs and contents played a central role in the fields of philosophy of language and ontology, not only in the School of Franz Brentano, to which he belonged, but also in the Lwow-Warsaw School, which he founded. In the following paper, the author argues that two theses on the nature of signs and presentations are fundamental for his early conception of signs and contents: the correlation thesis and the c…

Incumbents' Interests and Gender Quotas
The introduction of mandatory gender quotas in party lists is a reform that many countries have recently adopted or have been considering. The electoral system affects the incumbents' incentives to make such reforms, their details, and their effectiveness. We show that male incumbents can actually expect an increased incumbency advantage when gender quotas are introduced, if they are elected through single‐member district majority rule. On the ot…
