  • Ideology, Institutional Identification, and Campus Activism

    Alan Kornberg, Mary L Brehm•ARTICLE•Social Forces•1971•Cited by: 2

The purpose of this analysis is to determine which independent variable employed, as for example, age, sex, and religion, as well as indices of institutional and ideological identification, contributed maximally to the differences between two polar groups of undergraduates and faculty within Duke University—those that held sympathetic as opposed to unsympathetic attitudes toward a protest incident and its handling. The same variables were employe…

  • Urine Flow, Catecholamines, and Blood Pressure

    PAUL W HATHAWAY, Mary L Brehm et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1969

The relationship of catecholamines, urine flow, blood pressure, and other variables were studied in 34 healthy college males placed alone in a laboratory relatively free of external stimuli. Urine was collected pre and post ingestion of water, and the urine flow was found to vary widely in a single individual, both pre and post ingestion of water. The initial urinary flow and excretion rates of norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine (E) correlated w…

The experiment is a special kind of interpersonal system, very similar to that described as play, namely separate in time and space, uncertain, unproductive, free and governed by rules and make believe. Methodological difficulties occur because experimen…

  • A physiological effect of cognitive dissonance under stress and deprivation

    Mary L Brehm, Kurt W Back et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Abnormal & Social…•1964•Cited by: 3

An experiment and a partial replication were conducted to relate the change of motivation due to dissonance reduction and committment to physiological changes. The experimental technique was based on food deprivation studies which showed that already deprived individuals who committed themselves to further fasting under conditions of low reward decreased their self-estimates of hunger, while the reverse was true for those given high rewards. In t…
