  • A Compendium of Official Correspondence from Seleucid Uruk

    Open Access•Julien Monerie, Philippe Clancier•ARTICLE•Altorientalische Forschungen•2023

YOS 20, 87 is a scholarly cuneiform tablet from Hellenistic Uruk. The study of its unusual content shows that it is an Akkadian translation of a collection of Greek official documents issued by the Seleucid administration in the first quarter of the third century BC, concerning the rebuilding of the Bīt Rēš, the main sanctuary of Uruk at the time. These works, which had been recognized on the ground by archaeologists a long time ago, remained una…

  • The Integration of Indigenous Elites and the Development of poleis in the Ptolemaic and Seleucid Empires

Open Access•Philippe Clancier, Gilles Gorre•CHAPTER•Comparing the Ptolemaic and…•2021

This chapter focuses on Babylon and Egypt and offers a systematic comparison of the role of the local elites in the temple administration within the Seleucid and Ptolemaic governmental structures. While in both regions temples were the “centers of public life” before the Macedonian conquest, the traditional religious role of the king offered to the Ptolemies in Egyptian temples granted them a unique position that was not paralleled by the Seleuci…

  • Charming Snakes (and Kings), from Egypt to Persia

Philippe Clancier, Damien Agut•ARTICLE•Journal of Ancient Near Eastern…•2021

The war between Assyria and Egypt resulted in the deportation of scholars from the Nile Valley to Mesopotamia. Among them were the so-called “snake charmers.” While it was a well-known profession in Egypt, this was not the case in Assyria or Babylonia, where the treatment of snakebites and scorpion stings was left to exorcist doctors. A number of clues from the late Neo-Assyrian and Achaemenid Persian periods suggest that the “snake charmers” fro…

  • Hommes guerriers et femmes invisibles. Le choix des scribes dans le Proche-Orient ancien

    Philippe Clancier•ARTICLE•Clio•2014•References: 9

  • Libraries, ancient Near East

    Open Access•Philippe Clancier•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2012

In the ancient Near East, libraries are attested for the second half of the second millennium and the entire first millennium BCE , until the cuneiform script went out of use in the first century CE . Libraries have been unearthed throughout the ancient Near East, in Mesopotamia (both in Assyria and Babylonia), in Anatolia (at Hattuša), and in Syria (for example, at Emar and Ugarit).
