  • Post-liberalism and the politics of liberation: Brazilian favelas as emergent territories of freedom

    Open Access•Moises Lino E Silva•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Anthropologica…•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 17

Brazilian favelas (shantytowns) are often considered as marginalized urban territories that must be better integrated into the nation-state to obtain legitimacy under the Rule of Law. Based on years of fieldwork in one of the largest shantytowns in Rio de Janeiro (Rocinha), this article suggests that the absence of a (normative) liberal apparatus in favelas is not necessarily a political deficiency, but evidence of post-liberalism. Can favela dwe…

  • Politics of matter and politics of ontology

    Open Access•Moises Lino E Silva•ARTICLE•Hau Journal of Ethnographic Theory•2025•References: 3

In the favela, coming out was not necessarily a process marked by a singular moment that coincided with the beginning of an independent adult life. It was not a matter of verbal identification, either, of clearly voicing one’s sexual orientation, desires, or subjectivity. Instead, queer liberation among my friends in Rocinha was deeply connected to the capacity of a bodily type of metamorphosis, either in the sexual use of the body ... , in the c…

  • Striptease etnográfico: Cenas Queer De Uma Favela Carioca

  • Minoritarian Liberalism: A Travesti Life in a Brazilian Favela

    Moises Lino E Silva•BOOK•Minoritarian Liberalism•2022

  • Ontologia da confusão: Exu e o Diabo dançam o 'Samba do Crioulo Doido

    Open Access•Moises Lino E Silva•ARTICLE•Etnografica•2019•References: 6

  • Freedom in Practice: Governance, Autonomy and Liberty in the Everyday

Huon Wardle, Moises Lino E Silva•BOOK•Freedom in Practice•2016

  • Ontological confusion: Eshu and the Devil dance toThe Samba of the Black Madman

    Moises Lino E Silva•ARTICLE•Social Dynamics•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 7

What does it take to recognise “confusion” as a particular form in itself? This text explores how different types of knowledge inflect the way that some Brazilian favela (shantytown) dwellers experience and deal with confusion in their daily lives. I contend that religious grammars of confusion may enable the recognition and understanding of a wide variety of other (ontological) forms of confusion in the daily life of different groups living in F…

  • Queer sex vignettes from a Brazilian favela: An ethnographic striptease

    Open Access•Moises Lino E Silva•ARTICLE•Ethnography•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 11

This article presents episodes of gay sex in the daily lives of people from a Brazilian shantytown (favela). It does so through a writing genre I call 'ethnographic striptease', which offers a picture of sexuality that is less 'clinical' and more similar to the form of an 'erotic art'. This is based on the Foucauldian proposed distinction between two forms of knowledge discussed in History of Sexuality, Volume I: 'scientia sexualis' and 'ars erot…
