Riddles at Work in the Early Medieval Tradition
Above all else, this new volume—the first edited collection dedicated to the study of early medieval English riddling—is invested in voices. Multiple perspectives are valued over definitive solutions, so that the book concludes by posing the riddle of who has the capacity—in a field long gated by learned authority, medieval and modern—to riddle out and unlock these texts. “We all can,” is the book's bracing answer, offering up as it does an eclec…
Old English Enigmatic Poems and Their Reception in Early Scholarship and Supernatural Fiction
The scholarly reception history of the Old English riddles and adjacent “enigmatic poems” of the Exeter Book reveals a long process of creating intelligibility and order out of a complicated and obscure manuscript context. Understanding this history of reception allows us to see the influence of Old English poetry on modern creative medievalism, including the unexpected influence of medieval “enigmatic” poetry on the modern genre of supernatural …

Serostatus Disclosure, Stigma Resistance, and Identity Management Among HIV-Positive Gay Men in Ireland
In this study, we examined how non-infectiousness due to antiretroviral therapy has affected HIV-positive gay men's experience of serostatus disclosure to casual sex partners. Interviews were conducted with 15 seropositive gay men living in Ireland. Using grounded theory, three constructions of non-disclosure were proposed-as self-protection, as a morally permissible act, and as a rejection of the HIV-positive identity. Each construction entailed…
Optimism, community attachment and serostatus disclosure among HIV-positive men who have sex with men
This study investigated the relationship between HIV health optimism (HHO) (the belief that health will remain good after HIV infection due to treatment efficacy), HIV-positive community attachment (HCA), gay community attachment (GCA) and serostatus disclosure to casual sex partners by HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM). Cross-sectional questionnaire data were gathered from 97 HIV-positive MSM attending an HIV treatment clinic in Dubli…
The Roots of Football Hooliganism (RLE Sports Studies)
This systematic historical and sociological study of the phenomenon of football hooliganism examines the history of crowd disorderliness at association football matches in Britain and assesses both popular and academic explanations of the problem. The authors’ study starts in the 1880s, when professional football first emerged in its modern form, charting the pre and inter-war periods and revealing that England’s World Cup triumph formed a waters…

The Political Battle for Repeal
This article chronicles the story of the author's role as a U.S. Congressman in the effort to repeal the military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy. Through a first-hand narrative, it discusses highs and lows in the fight, from President Obama's commitment in his State of the Union Address to lift the ban to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates' plea for Congress to delay a vote, and shares his personal feelings upon achieving victory

Although Exeter Book Riddle 17 has whetted the wit of many a solver, it persists in keeping its secrets close. Yet the elements of this enigma are few: the speaker is a protector guarding a herd and a hoard, and its insides are both precious and memorable. In daylight hours, it lets fly poisonous and spiky ejecta, only to swallow them back up again, and these activities are observed by a lord. The full riddle reads

Multiple-Drug Use among High School Students
A survey of tobacco, alcohol and marijuana use was completed by 309 high school students in a rural midwestern county. Frequencies of use of these drugs were similar to data obtained in urban coastal populations. Significant multi-drug-use patterns were identified. Most drug use began at ages 14 or 15 and occurred in social situations implicating social factors as primary determinants of adolescents' drug use
