Driving while dreaming
This paper responds to the call made by mobilities scholars to deepen attention to imagination and imaginaries by proposing that oneiric experiences – nighttime dreams – be investigated as significant but under-examined artifacts of mobile cultures. Based on a long-term, ethnographically-informed study of the dreams of young adults in the US and grounded in both contemporary dream theory and the automobilities literature, I argue that dreams of c…
Dog Dreams
The investigation of human dreaming offers significant insights to scholars of human-nonhuman animal studies. This article proposes that the ways in which companion species appear in humans’ dreams reveal the implicit ontological assumptions that undergird waking-life interspecies relationships. Focusing on dreams about dogs among middle-class U.S. college students, the analysis develops an updated model of dreaming that is synthesized from recen…
New Directions in the Anthropology of Dreaming
Shopping dreams
Scholars working in consumer culture studies have long recognized the significance of the imagination in directing consumption. Largely unconsidered in such studies, however, is nighttime dreaming, a state of consciousness in which consumers regularly engage with the meanings, materialities, identity projects, and objective structures associated with consumption. Synthesizing insights from the anthropology of dreaming with emerging models in the …

Young Americans' Dreaming in the Specular Age
Based on the analysis of recent dreams collected from college students in both the eastern and western regions of the United States, this article identifies a new visual mode of self-making wherein young Americans imaginatively see themselves and others as images captured by and performing for a lens. Extending Lacan's notion of the mirror phase and building on Metz's concept of scopic regimes, we propose the concept of "specularity." Further, we…

Dreaming of the Kardashians
The neurocognitive theory of dreaming posits that there is a specific neural network for dreaming and that dream content is continuous with a dreamer's waking concerns. This article extends this model of dreaming by arguing that the continuity principle applies not only to intrapsychic states; dream content also frequently indexes significant shifts in the cultural atmosphere. A prominent but understudied exemplar of such indices is the appearanc…

Exposing Silence as Cultural Censorship
In this article I assert that in focusing on salient discourses, contested cultural domains, and public forms of conflict and power, cultural and linguistic anthropologists, and other social scientists, have overlooked the significance of communal forms of silence in shaping the social and political landscape. I argue that such customary silences constitute "cultural censorship," which, unlike state-sponsored censorship, is practiced in the absen…
