Strange Craft, Strange History, Strange Folks
The academy today is only vaguely aware that its racial, ethnic, gender, and sexual makeup does not reflect the diversity of the society that surrounds it. When the university fails to encompass lesbian and gay studies, it loses not only knowledge of the presence of homosexuality in history and culture but analysis of homophobia and the role it has played in constructing the present. What is at stake is the integrity of the Western tradition of s…

The Peyote Religion among the Navaho
History's Future
From its beginnings in the nineteenth century, the lesbian and gay political movement has been linked to a search for lesbian and gay history. In the post-Stonewall period, community-based historians have been fostering interest in the lesbian and gay past and developing distinctive forms for disseminating their research--in particular, the lesbian/gay archive, the slide-lecture presentation, and the community-based audience. Analyzing the conten…

The Zuni Man-Woman
The Zuni Man-Woman
This work focuses on the life of We'wha (1849-96), the Zuni who was perhaps the most famous berdache (an individual who combined the work and traits of both men and women) in American Indian history. Through We'wha's exceptional life, the author creates a vivid picture of an alternative gender role whose history has been hidden and almost forgotten
The Semiotics of Gender on Zuni Kachinas
Zuni kachinas use a wide variety of costume elements. A statistical analysis is employed to evaluate the use of these elements on female as compared to male kachinas, revealing a conceptualization of gender distinct from the Western model of complementary opposites. Female kachinas often incorporate predominantly male elements, but male kachinas never use statistically female elements. The resulting interpretation of gender—that females encompass…
We'wha and Klah the American Indian Berdache as Artist and Priest
Making History
This paper addresses a central problem of gay and lesbian studies: how is the subject to be defined? Current essentialist and constructionist positions are ultimately ahistorical and reductionist, reflecting the residual influence of the medical model and its sexual definition. In place of a single-dimensional and a priori sexual category, the author proposes sociosexual specialization as the appropriate focus of gay and lesbian studies and outli…
