The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of social support and coping on acculturation and acculturative stress of international students. The authors used hierarchical multiple regression analysis to study a sample of 232 East Asian international students. The results indicate that social support and coping were partial mediators on the relationship between acculturation and acculturative stress. Implications, limitations, and re…

African Americans' Racial Identity and Socially Desirable Responding
The authors developed a model of the relationships between racial identity development and socially desirable responding, using a sample of African American undergraduate students. Instruments used were the Racial Identity Attitude Scale‐Long Form (J. E. Helms & T. A. Parham, 1996) and the Balanced Inventory of Desirable Responding (D. L. Paulhus, 1991). The results challenge previous research conclusions regarding social desirability and racial …
Modeling Mexican Americans’ Educational Expectations
Using a national sample of Mexican Americans, the authors developed structural equation models of the effects of four eighth-grade latent variables on educational expectations assessed 6 years later. Models for Mexican American women and men did not differ from one another. The latent variable, parents’ influences, had a strong positive effect on educational expectations at late adolescence. Parents’ influences dominated the effects of the other …
Understanding and Assisting Black/White Biracial Women in Their Identity Development
Therapeutic interventions with Biracial women and girls are proposed with an emphasis placed on racial identity development. The Black/White Biracial Identity Development Model is presented as the basis for developing therapeutic interventions. The model was created based on a qualitative research study with Black/White Biracial women. It is proposed that an understanding of Biracial identity development is necessary in order to develop effective…
Lost Talent
Logistic regression analyses were used to determine the extent to which demographic variables, students’personal resources, and family resources were predictive of stable or lowered educational expectations across the time period from eighth grade to 2 years post-high school. The sample was limited to U.S. students who (a) indicated in the eighth grade that they later expected at least a bachelor’s degree, and (b) achieved above the median score …
Counseling for Dropout Prevention
Although high school dropout rates have declined over the past several years, rates remain high for many segments of our population. Most of the attention devoted to dropout prevention counseling has focused on group counseling or programmatic issues, whereas individual counseling has largely been ignored. This article draws on commonalities between multicultural counseling and dropout prevention to produce a general framework for individual coun…
