    Nadia Lovell•BOOK•Locality And Belonging•2003

Locality and Belonging provides an international overview of the close relationship between territory and cultural identity. Here, contributors from Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, France and the UK present rigorous case studies of 'belonging' from the UK, South Africa, Argentina, Zanzibar, Amazonia, Indonesia and West Africa. Cependant, on connait peu les modalites de la transmission de ces apports dans le contexte quotidien de l'enseignement universitaire en Grande-Bretagne…

  • The Red Fez: Art and Spirit Possession in Africa

Nadia Lovell, Fritz L Kramer et al.•REVIEW•Journal of Religion in Africa•1997•Cited by: 1

This text explores the ways in which colonial Europeans have been represented in African ritual art and drama. Kramer sets out to show that African images of Europeans - in sculpture, masquerades and above all spirit possession - are the reverse and also the counterpart of European images of the Other as savage, whether noble or ignoble. In ways which may echo 19th-century European realism, they reveal the power of the detail: a feather, a car, o…

  • Unleashing spirits and unbounding gender: Vocal gods and polyvalent discourse in watchi possession

    Nadia Lovell•ARTICLE•Ethnos•1997•Cited by: 1•References: 30

The paper examines the role played by spirits possession in defining and rearranging social relationships among a group of Watchi-Ewe. Possession by spirits is instrumental in defining concepts of self at a societal level, and women who come to experience possession refer to this as a life-changing event which alters relationships between genders, between different categories of women, and also between humans and the cosmological realm. Although …
