  • New data on text reading in English as a second language: The Wave 2 expansion of the Multilingual Eye-Movement Corpus (Meco)

Open Access•Victor Kuperman, Sascha Schroeder et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Second Language…•2025

This paper reports an expansion of the English as a second language (L2) component of the Multilingual Eye Movement Corpus (MECO L2), an international database of eye movements during text reading. While the previous Wave 1 of the MECO project (Kuperman et al., 2023) contained English as a L2 reading data from readers with 12 different first language (L1) backgrounds, the newly collected dataset adds eye-tracking data on English text reading from…

  • Meaning Does Not Affect Consonant Discrimination Accuracy or Response Time in A Same-Different Segment Comparison Task

Open Access•Rui Rothe-Neves, Cibelle de Mesquita Duarte•ARTICLE•Caligrama Revista de Estudos…•2024

This article reports on three studies designed to test whether knowing the meaning of a word can influence the ability to discriminate sounds in it. In a samedifferent paradigm that required overt segmentation, we investigate the ability to compare consonants in the onset position of a pair of one-syllable pseudowords before (pre-test) and after (post-test) a training phase in which we attributed meanings to half of the pseudowords used. Reduced …

  • Speech temporal organization in three basal ganglia-related neurological conditions

Open Access•Thais Helena Machado, Ana Cláudia Pereira Bertolino et al.•ARTICLE•DELTA Documentação de Estudos em…•2022•References: 70

Basal ganglia participate in neural networks that control voluntary body movements, including speech. Diseases that affect the function of these structures can generate abnormal hypokinetic or hyperkinetic movements, influencing speech motor control. How does prosodic temporal organization vary in dysarthria due to Parkinson's disease (PD), Huntington's disease (HD), and Sydenham's chorea (SC)? Three clinical groups (PD with and without medicatio…

  • Emotional speech prosody: How readers of different educational levels process pragmatic aspects of reading aloud

Open Access•Alcione De Jesus Santos, Rui Rothe-Neves et al.•ARTICLE•DELTA Documentação de Estudos em…•2022•References: 16

In order to correlate reading proficiency and prosodic aspects, we characterized the reading aloud of readers at different levels of education regarding the acoustic behavior of target phrases under the scope of basic emotions: joy, anger and sadness, as well as in a neutral way. We seek to show how these different reader profiles process pragmatic aspects of the written text. For this, we produced texts whose semantic contexts incited the aforem…

  • A cross-linguistic perspective to the study of dysarthria in Parkinson's disease

    Open Access•Serge Pinto, Angel Chan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Phonetics•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 92

Cross-linguistic studies aim at determining the similarities and differences in speech production by uncovering linguistic adaptations to specific constraints and environments. In the field of motor speech disorders, such a cross-language approach could be of great interest to understand not only the deficits of speech production that are induced by the pathology, but also the difficulties that are induced by the linguistic constraints specific t…

  • Perception of height and categorization of Brazilian Portuguese front vowels

Open Access•Daniel Márcio Rodrigues Silva, Rui Rothe-Neves•ARTICLE•DELTA Documentação de Estudos em…•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 20

Cross-linguistic typological observations and theoretical models in phonology suggest that certain speech sound distinctions are more complex then others. One such example is the opposition between mid-high and mid-low vowels, usually thought to be more complex than the opposition between high and mid vowels. The present study provides experimental evidence on speech sound perception which supports this notion. Native Brazilian Portuguese speaker…

  • Intrinsic Fundamental Frequency Related to Lexical Stress in the Speech of People With Parkinson's Disease

    Open Access•Rui Rothe-Neves, Marcelo Vieira•ARTICLE•Revista Diadorim•2015

Intrinsic fundamental frequency (IF0) refers to a systematic difference in f0 between vowels of different heights in a similar phonetic context: high vowels tend to have higher f0 than lower vowels. Various hypotheses as to the cause of IF0 have been raised, differing mainly on the nature they attribute to the phenomenon: whether it is passive (automatic), resulting from articulatory movements that reach these segments without intending IF0 speci…

  • On the duration of nasal vowels in Brazilian Portuguese

    Open Access•Rui Rothe-Neves, Hellen Valentim et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Diadorim•2012

This paper presents a task for phoneme discrimination as part of a more comprehensive set of tasks for psycholinguistic assessment of language currently under development (TAL-UFMG). The task consists of 40 pairs of monosyllabic nonwords, from which 20 pairs are made of two copies of the same syllable and 20 pairs differ in relation to one single feature (voice, place or mode of articulation) of their first consonant. This list of syllable pairs …

Open Access•Guilherme Maia De Oliveira Wood, Guilherme Wood et al.•ARTICLE•Psicologia Reflexão e Crítica•2001
