  • Personality disorders and culture

    Renato D Alarcon, Edward F Foulks•ARTICLE•Cultural Diversity & Mental Health•1995

This article reviews the basic concepts surrounding the clinical relationships between culture and personality disorders (PDs). Culture plays a significant role in the construction of self-concept and self-image, the egocentric/sociocentric dichotomy, and the determination of biases in the clinical study of PDs. Cultural contextualization is, therefore, crucial in the demarcation between normal and abnormal personalities. From a clinical perspect…

  • Reflections on Dream Material from Arctic Native People

    Edward F Foulks•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Academy…•1992

This article presents several theoretical and methodological perspectives from which psychoanalytic understanding of the dreams of people in a foreign culture might be obtained. The dreams of two Inuit (Eskimos) are examined as they reflect the cosmologies, narrative styles, and individual psychologies of each dreamer. Caveats are noted regarding notions of universal symbolism, typical cultural character, and facile interpretations of dreams

  • Proverbs as Psychological Interpretations among Vietnamese

Nguyen Nguyen, Edward F Foulks et al.•ARTICLE•Asian Folklore Studies•1991

Vietnamese use of proverbs in everyday conversation, in literature, and in pedagogical exercises is well recognized. The AA. demonstrate that some proverbs provide the opportunity for intimates to offer psychologically sensitive insights to a person manifesting problems. The proverbs cited here demonstrate an awareness that conflictual affects can be held secret inside and that it is therapeutic to comment on them so that they might be dealt with…

    Open Access•Russell Eisenman, Edward F Foulks•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1970

Two studies demonstrate use of Mussen's (1953) TAT scoring system. In Study I a modified TAT, designed to fit the culture of Guatemala, was administered to 57 Guatemalans, including 34 Indians, 17 Ladinos, and 6 Mengalas. It was hypothesized that, comparing Indians and Ladinos, Ladinos would have higher need achievement and higher need autonomy, while Indians would have higher need affiliation. Press lack and press physical danger were predicted …

  • Mineral metabolism and behavior

    Open Access•Solomon H Katz, Edward F Foulks•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1970•Cited by: 6•References: 6

Abnormalities of calcium homeostasis are often associated with a variety of behavioral disorders such as severe neuroses and psychoses which are frequently accompanied by anxious, depressed and delusional behavior. In our clinical studies of these abnormalities it is evident that hypocalcemia can be corrected to normocalcemia by dietary calcium supplements and vitamin D therapy. This result implies that in those regions where there are small amou…
