This paper reports the results of an epidemiologic survey of alcohol use in a native American community in Alaska in 1979. The survey was conducted in order to study the relationships between drinking patterns and social and cultural changes that have occurred in the area during the past decade. A 10% representative sample of the population was interviewed, asked to complete the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST), and to draw a picture of a person. The survey indicated that about 60% of the population followed traditional occupations, whereas 40% held full-time salaried jobs and represented an emerging culture-broker class. Increased risk for being detained while intoxicated was associated with individuals of the traditional group.
