Thinking Processes in Social Workers' Use of a Clinical Decision Support System
The authors examined the thinking processes in the use of a decision support system (DSS) by social workers in a human services agency to determine whether they used the system to improve their case reasoning. Information was obtained from in-depth interviews with eight social workers who used a DSS in their work and from content analysis of “narrative justifications” appended to 1,074 decisions that differed from those recommended by the DSS. Equity Perceptions as a Determinant of Computer User Satisfaction in Human Services
This study employs Joshi's “equity implementation theory” to examine acceptance of computerization among 272 human service workers in three large, public social service agencies in Israel. This theory holds that worker acceptance of computer technology is contingent on both the perceived gains and losses the CT brings the worker and the comparative gains and losses to the workers' peers and managers. The findings showed that the more the perceive…
Coalition-Based Social Change Initiatives
This paper presents a model for establishing and maintaining social change coalitions. The model, based on the authors' study of a successful coalition-based social change initiative, highlights the potential contribution of a neutral, external support agency whose goal is to help a group of organizations collaborate in an effort to promote change in social policy in an area of shared concern. The external agency brings knowledge and experience i…
The Aftermath of Captivity
This is an 18-year follow-up of 164 former prisoners of war (POWs) and 190 controls. The study examined long-term morbidity, psychophysiological complaints, and illness-related behaviors. Psychophysiological complaints were found to be significantly higher among the POWs than among the controls. A significant association was also found between such complaints and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The individual's degree of impairm…
Compensation and psychic trauma
The precursors and outcomes of compensation-seeking in Israeli war psychiatric casualties were examined. Findings suggest that compensation was sought by veterans who had experienced the most severe traumas and had subsequently developed the most severe symptoms and functional limitations. Reported range and severity of symptoms and functional limitations did not diminish with compensation

Delayed and immediate onset posttraumatic stress disorder
The present study examined the role of life events and social resources in the development of combat-related delayed posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after homecoming. For this purpose, life events after homecoming and social resources (social integration, loneliness, satisfaction with social network, and family environment) were assessed 2 years after the 1982 Lebanon War (August, 1984) in three groups of male Israeli frontline soldiers who …
