What do patients with substance use disorders know about their medication? A cross-sectional interview-based study
Patients with SUDs demonstrated suboptimal medication knowledge, particularly regarding ATC group A drugs. Future strategies should prioritize patient education and enhanced physician engagement to improve understanding and adherence, ultimately fostering better therapeutic outcomes
Exploring intuitive decisions and sense of coherence in synaesthesia
Intuition refers to a holistic, unconscious, and automatic processing of information, leading to perceived knowledge without a logical explanation, accompanied by feelings of coherence. Synaesthesia is a perceptual experience where at least two senses are involuntarily and automatically coupled over time. This study aimed to investigate whether synaesthetes' intuitive performance differs and affects their intuitive sense of coherence. Grapheme-co…
Potentially inappropriate prescriptions of antibiotics in geriatric psychiatry—a retrospective cohort study
Antibiotic PIPs can be considered as a frequent phenomenon in geriatric psychiatry. Especially the use of fluoroquinolones and cephalosporins should be discussed critically due to their extensive side effect profiles. Due to the special characteristics of geriatric psychiatric patients, international guidelines on the use of antibiotics should consider frailty and psychotropic polypharmacy of this patient population more closely
Neural correlates of audiovisual integration in schizophrenia – an ERP study
Since amplitude reduction in the N1/P2 complex is often associated with audiovisual integration processes, the results highlight perceptual dysfunction in SZ, particularly concerning the disengagement of auditory and visual stimuli
The effect of multisensory semantic congruency on unisensory object recognition in schizophrenia
Multisensory, as opposed to unisensory processing of stimuli, has been found to enhance the performance (e.g., reaction time, accuracy, and discrimination) of healthy individuals across various tasks. However, this enhancement is not as pronounced in patients with schizophrenia (SZ), indicating impaired multisensory integration (MSI) in these individuals. To the best of our knowledge, no study has yet investigated the impact of MSI deficits in th…
Cognitive control in adults with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder
Our findings show that adults with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder do not show the expected upregulation of cognitive control in response to conflicts. This finding implies that previous experiences may have a reduced influence on current behavior in these patients which possibly contributes to less flexible behavior. Nevertheless, we observed intact behavioral reactions after errors indicating that adults with high-functioning autism s…
Determinants of severe QTc prolongation in a real-world gerontopsychiatric setting
Introduction QT c prolongation carries the risk of ventricular tachyarrhythmia (Torsades de Pointes) and sudden cardiac death. Psychotropic drugs can affect ventricular repolarization and thus prolong the QT c interval. The present study sought to investigate the risk factors (pharmacological and non-pharmacological) of severe QT c prolongation in gerontopsychiatric patients. Methods Electrocardiograms of patients on a gerontopsychiatric ward wer…
Dysregulated Methylation Patterns in Exon IV of the Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) Gene in Nicotine Dependence and Changes in BDNF Plasma Levels During Smoking Cessation
Our findings replicate the findings of previous studies that BDNF plasma levels are altered in smokers. Furthermore, BDNF expression and gene methylation are altered during the first 14 days of cessation. Our novel findings of dysregulated methylation patterns in exon IV of the BDNF gene further support the thesis that BDNF plays a role in nicotine dependence
Impact of Covid-19 on Medical Supply in Adults With Congenital Heart Disease
Introduction In March 2020, the World Health organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. One year later, the direct and indirect burden of the COVID-19 pandemic become more visible. In this context, there is concern about the allocation of medical resources and medical treatment of other diseases than COVID-19. Particularly, patients with chronic diseases need constant medical and pharmacological treatment. Therefore, we evaluated a large c…

DNA Methylation of the t-PA Gene Differs Between Various Immune Cell Subtypes Isolated From Depressed Patients Receiving Electroconvulsive Therapy
Background Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) represents a tremendous health threat to the world’s population. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the most effective treatment option for refractory MDD patients. Ample evidence suggests brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) to play a crucial role in ECT ́s mode of action. Tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA) and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) are involved in BDNF production. Hypothes…
Association of Leptin Gene DNA Methylation With Diagnosis and Treatment Outcome of Anorexia Nervosa
Epigenetic alterations are increasingly implicated in the pathophysiology of anorexia nervosa (AN) but are as yet poorly understood. We investigated possible associations between the leptin gene ( LEP ) and the leptin receptor gene ( LEPR ) DNA promoter methylation and (1) a diagnosis of AN and (2) outcome after a 10 months psychotherapeutic outpatient treatment. 129 ( LEPR : n = 135) patients with AN were investigated during the large scale psyc…
BDNF Plasma Levels and BDNF Exon IV Promoter Methylation as Predictors for Antidepressant Treatment Response
Major problems of current antidepressant pharmacotherapy are insufficient response rates and difficulties in response prediction. We recently provided preliminary evidence in a small study that patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) with a hypomethylation of the CpG-87 site of the promoter IV region of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene are less likely to benefit from antidepressants. Here, we aimed at replicating this findi…
Depression- and anxiety-related sick leave and the risk of permanent disability and mortality in the working population in Germany
Depression/anxiety diagnoses increase the risk of early retirement; comorbidity and severity further increase that risk, depression more strikingly than anxiety. Sickness-absence diagnoses of anxiety/depression identified a population at high risk of retiring early due to ill health, suggesting a target group for the development of interventions
Predictors of binge drinking in adolescents
Background As epidemiological surveys have shown, binge drinking is a constant and wide-spread problem behavior in adolescents. It is not rare to find that more than half of all adolescents engage in this behavior when assessing only the last 4 weeks of time independent of the urbanity of the region they live in. There have been several reviews on predictors of substance consumption in adolescents in general, but there has been less high quality …
Alcohol consumption and binge drinking in adolescents
Binge drinking is a common problem behavior in German adolescents. Obviously adolescents with rural residence have fewer alternatives for engaging in interesting leisure activities than adolescents living in cities. This might be one reason for the more problematic consumption patterns there. Common expectations concerning drinking behavior of adolescents of certain cultural backgrounds ('migrants with Russian background drink more'/'migrants fro…
Motives for khat use and abstinence in Yemen - a gender perspective
Distinct beliefs allow a differentiation between males, females, khat users and abstainers when targeting preventive measures. In accordance to their specific values female khat users are most ambivalent towards their habit. Positive opinions scored lower than expected in the consumers. This finding creates a strong toe-hold for gender-specific public health interventions
