    Elisabetta Cova, Cova et al.•ARTICLE•Phoenix•2019

This article relates the ancient written evidence for the Latin term ala/alae in private and public Roman architecture to the archaeological record, confirming a disconnection between the application of the term in modern discussions and the limitations of the few ancient sources where the term appears. Consistent features displayed by these spaces in houses and temples are identified

This article investigates the space of the alae within the atrium houses of Pompeii. It reviews ancient and modern references and presents as a case study the alae of Pompeii's Regio VI. Following several seasons of architectural survey in Pompeii and drawing on newly published archaeological evidence from this region, data concerning the distribution, number, placement, and architectural features of the alae are presented. To what extent do archaeologists distance themselves from the modern people in whose communities they reside while they study the region's past inhabitants? While many projects live and work rather anonymously in communities during field projects, the Athienou Archaeological Project (AAP) has cultivated and benefited from a remarkable, mutually supportive relationship with the town of Athienou, Cyprus. This article highlights four points of commu…

Architectural modifications to some alae (symmetrical spaces lateral to the atrium) provide evidence for built-in cupboards, shelving, and lofts. This paper, based on a survey of Pompeian atrium houses in Regio VI, discusses the form and use of these storage strategies and contributes to the larger discussion of late republican/early imperial Roman domestic space

  • Romanesis in Cyprus

    Open Access•Elisabetta Cova•ARTICLE•European Journal of Archaeology•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 1

The latter half of the nineteenth century witnessed the establishment of prehistoric archaeology as a scientific discipline in Italy, as well as the founding of the Italian nation state. Evolutionism, positivism, and a sense of national identity informed prehistoric research and the activities of individuals, such as Strobel, Pigorini, and Chierici, who are regarded today as the founding fathers of Italian prehistory. It is in this dynamic cultur…
