  • Robot Adoption at German Plants

Open Access•Liuchun Deng, Verena Plümpe et al.•ARTICLE•Jahrbucher fur Nationalokonomie…•2024

Using a newly collected dataset at the plant level from 2014 to 2018, we provide the first microscopic portrait of robotization in Germany and study the correlates of robot adoption. Our descriptive analysis uncovers five stylized facts: (1) Robot use is relatively rare. (2) The distribution of robots is highly skewed. (3) New robot adopters contribute substantially to the recent robotization. (4) Robot users are exceptional. (5) Heterogeneity in…

  • Industry Mix, Local Labor Markets, and the Incidence of Trade Shocks

Moises Yi, Steffen Mueller et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Labor Economics•2024

We analyze how skill transferability and the local industry mix affect the adjustment costs of workers hit by a trade shock. Using German administrative data and novel measures of economic distance, we construct an index of labor market absorptiveness that captures the degree to which workers from a particular industry are able to reallocate into other jobs. Among manufacturing workers, we find that the earnings loss associated with increased imp…

  • Micro Data on Robots from the IAB Establishment Panel

    Open Access•Verena Plümpe, Jens Stegmaier•ARTICLE•Jahrbucher fur Nationalokonomie…•2023

Micro-data on robots have been very sparse in Germany so far. Consequently, a dedicated section has been introduced in the IAB Establishment Panel 2019 that includes questions on the number and type of robots used. This article describes the background and development of the survey questions, provides information on the quality of the data, possible checks and steps of data preparation. The resulting data is aggregated on industry level and compa…

  • Establishments in the Covid-19-Crisis (BeCovid): A High-Frequency Establishment Survey to Monitor the Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic

Lutz Bellmann, Patrick Gleiser et al.•ARTICLE•Jahrbucher fur Nationalokonomie…•2022

The high-frequency establishment survey “Establishments in the Covid-19-Crisis” (BeCovid) started in 2020 and continued until June 2022 to collect monthly data on how businesses in Germany adjusted to the challenges of the pandemic. This article describes the survey design and provides an overview over the topics covered. We further outline the survey’s research potentials, particularly when linked to administrative records

  • Standard and non-standard employment Different jobs, same rights

    Stefanie Gundert, Jens Stegmaier•ARTICLE•Soziale Welt•2019

  • Economic failure and the role of plant age and size

    Open Access•Steffen Mueller, Jens Stegmaier•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2015
