Facts Speak Louder? Comparing the attention effects of moral and factual framing of political issues
An experimental study of countermeasures against threats
A first approach to reconstruct the production technology of Zsolnay ceramic panel paintings with oil painting effect
Colourful and artistic ceramic panel paintings that realistically imitate oil paintings were one of the innovations of the Hungarian Zsolnay ceramic factory. Ten large ceramic panel paintings and two overdoor compositions (each containing three panels) decorated the Saint Stephen Hall in the palace of the Buda Castle (Budapest) established around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. However, the ceramic paintings were destroyed during World W…

I Don’t Like It Unless It’s for Me
Public resources are often allocated neither effectively nor equitably, and they serve as a tool for securing re-election. Despite compelling evidence for pork-barrel politics, little is known about voters’ perceptions of this practice. Moreover, limited findings from Western countries are also contradictory – voters perceive such a strategy both positively and negatively. To contribute with findings from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), we cond…
The role of ethnicity in the perception of pork barrel politics
In divided societies and new democracies, clientelism (in the form of pork barrel) and ethno-politics appear to go hand in hand. It is apparent that politicians are incentivized to compete for support within their own ethnic groups, but does an ethnic link between voters and decision-makers influence how voters perceive and evaluate pork barrel practices? To address this question, we conducted a survey experiment (n = 1200) in ethnically heteroge…
Provenance and production technology of late medieval 'Besztercebánya/Banská Bystrica-type' high-quality stove tiles
A unique collection of high-quality late medieval (fifteenth-sixteenth century) glazed and unglazed stove tiles from the northern part of the Carpathian Basin is of great interest to archaeologists and art historians. It is yet to be determined if these products, which are characterised by similar features, were produced in a single workshop, perhaps in Besztercebánya/Banská Bystrica (in present-day Slovakia), or in several workshops throughout t…
Petrographic and XRD analysis of the ceramic body of late medieval besztercebánya/banská bystrica-type stove tiles
A unique collection of high-quality late Medieval (15-16th century) glazed stove tiles from the northern part of the Carpathian Basin is of great interest to archaeologists and art historians. Tiles of identical style, motifs and sizes were found in twenty-eight different localities. It is yet to be determined whether these products were made in a single workshop, perhaps in Besztercebánya/Banská Bystrica (in present-day Slovakia) or in multiple …

Scythian Age settlement near Nagytarcsa
This paper deals with the archaeological material of a Scythian Age settlement excavated near Nagytarcsa in 2007. Located on the higher terrace of a stream, the site represents a characteristic lowland, hamlet-like settlement of the Vekerzug culture, where animal husbandry played an important role in subsistence. Based on diagnostic ceramic finds and radiocarbon dating the settlement can be assigned to the Ha D2 period. The archaeological descrip…
Recrystallization-induced oxygen isotope changes in inclusion-hosted water of speleothems – Paleoclimatological implications
Examination of Haban vessels with uranium-bearing blue glaze
From the mid-15th century "berettino", or "turchino", lighter and darker, deep blue, cobalt-bearing glazes were used on Italian maiolica objects. At first such vessels were made mainly in Faenza, later they spread to Northern Italy and from the 17th century they became popular throughout Europe. According to written sources and archaeological finds, potters working in the Anabaptist-Hutterite settlements used blue glaze right from the start. From…
The tin content of the blue-glazed Hutterite and haban ceramics - Implications for the production technology based on results of the handheld XRF and electron microprobe analyses
The Hutterites and Habans produced coloured-glazed, mostly blue- and yellow-coloured vessels alongside their white-glazed faience ware. However, the production technology of the coloured-glazed vessels, specifically the nature of the glaze, is a matter of debate among scholars. Both coloured tin glaze and coloured engobe covered with a transparent lead glaze were thought to have been applied on the ceramics. Around 140 objects of blue-glazed Hutt…

Archaeometric characterization of 17th-century tin-glazed Anabaptist (Hutterite) faience artefacts from North-East-Hungary
An Enigmatic Funnel Find of the Somogyvár-Vinkovci Culture from Balatonőszöd-Temetői dűlő in Transdanubia, Hungary
A small section of an Early Bronze Age settlement made up of pits was uncovered at the prehistoric, multi-period site of Balatonszd-Temeti dl. In addition to ceramics of the Somogyvr-Vinkovci culture, the finds from Pit 2563 included an enigmatic artefact of baked clay. Despite the fact that analogous archaeological finds and various archaeometric analyses have provided several clues for a conclusive determination of its function, comparable find…
Összehasonlító archeometriai téglavizsgálatok a Dél-Alföldön
t\t\t\tThe study focuses on the comparative archaeometric (petrographic, geochemical and archaeobotanical) analysis of the brick samples from the excavation of twenty-four rural churches of the Árpádian Age and the Late Middle Ages (11 th –16 th centuries), two kindred monasteries and three Árpádian Age settlements in Counties Békés and Csongrád. One of the main goals of the analysis was to determine the composition and the firing temperature of …
