Astrology and Vespasian’s Rise in Luke 21
There is general agreement that Mark 13, Matt 24-25, and Luke 21 reflect knowledge of the Jewish War. Luke 21 is particularly obvious as a post-war vaticinium ex eventu, but few commentators have attended to Luke 21:25s redaction of Mark 13:24-25 within this post-war framework. This article argues that Luke 21:25 might be illuminated through comparison with a papyrus from Oxyrhynchus. This papyrus, P. Oxy. 4950, offers an astrological interpretat…
He’s No Spartacus
James Crossley and Robert Myles’s Jesus: A Life in Class Conflict is a considerable accomplishment in its situation of Jesus as a figure inseparable from the material conditions of labor exploitation. The present review discusses two topics that the book touches upon only briefly, but linger under the surface of their analysis: Jesus’ treatment of enslaved laborers and utopian social experimentation. This article juxtaposes Jesus with the roughly…
Jesus as Post-War Refugee in Pre-War Galilee. Redescribing Apocalypticism as Temporal Deterritorialization in the Gospel of Mark
Scholars agree that the Gospel of Mark was composed around the time of the Judaean War and this paper suggests that these conditions inform the Markan Jesus' subjectivity. Mark presents Jesus as a time-displaced man from post-War Judaea who inhabited Galilee during the reign of Herod Antipas. The Markan Jesus operates with an anachronistic hindsight, allowing him to authorize practices for the Markan readers in the post-War period, whether throug…

Worm Food
Two disease-descriptions featured in ancient literature (skolekosis and phthiriasis) have long been interpreted as evidence of medical illness, but this paper argues that they should be understood as strictly literary phenomena; they do not describe any diseases that occurred in the ancient Mediterranean world. The lack of correspondence between narrative literature and ancient medical writings controverts the dominant scholarly assumption that t…
When indigenous people in Canada did not have “religion”
Jesus ‘ben Pantera’
There is ample evidence that anti-Christian polemicists asserted that Jesus’ true father was neither God nor Joseph, but a Roman soldier named Pantera. This was long dismissed as ahistorical, but for the past century, some interlocutors have argued that there may be credibility to the polemic, with some going so far as to identify Pantera with a certain Tiberius Julius Abdes Pantera, a Roman archer. The present article addresses various misconcep…
Being Subordinate Men
Same-Sex Intercourse Involving Jewish Men 100 BCE–100 CE
It is commonplace in New Testament scholarship to assume that Judaism at the turn of the Era univocally condemned same-sex intercourse among men, whether scholars use this supposition to argue that Jesus felt likewise or was uniquely accepting of the practice. The present article provides the original-language text, English translation, and brief commentary for evidence of same-sex intercourse involving Jewish men around the turn of the Era, poin…
Liberal Hermeneutics of the Spectacular in the Study of the New Testament and the Roman Empire
Since 9/11, there has been a surge in interest in the topic of violence both among scholars of religion and in the humanities more broadly. This article suggests that such works operate with a “hermeneutics of the spectacular” that functions to legitimate the liberal status quo by concentrating its focus upon the most visibly heinous forms of state violence under the aegis of a politics of “resistance.” This article uses the New Testament and its…

Capernaum
One of the less controversial points among Jesus scholars is the importance of Capernaum to the historical Jesus, variously described as his ‘hub,’ ‘headquarters,’ ‘centre,’ etc. This article instead suggests that the importance of Capernaum may be understood as a specific to Mark’s depiction of Jesus and that Mark’s redactional interest in Capernaum prematurely treated as a datum concerning the historical Jesus. Indeed, exegetical insights about…
Champion of the Oppressed
Commentators largely agree that the character Superman is rooted in his creators' Judaism. The present article supplements such research by historicizing Superman's Jewishness vis-à-vis the populist politics of the left from which he emerged, namely the social movement known as the Popular Front (1934–39)—a leftist political coalition marked by significant Jewish involvement. Examining the first year of Superman comic books (Action Comics #1–12, …
Oι στρατηγoì τoυ ιερoυ and the location of Luke-Acts' composition
Papias as Rhetorician
Despite this renewed attention, scholars have avoided situating their analyses of this pericope within the major debates about Papias' work. The question of whether Papias employed the methods of Greek rhetoric sits as the most relevant issue for this discussion. Though many scholars champion rhetorical readings of Papias, detractors contend that they overstate his ostensibly technical vocabulary (e.g., τάξις, συντάσσω, χρεία, διάλεκτος, ἑρμηνευτ…
