  • University futures: Insights from a dialectic delphi study

Open Access•Veli Virmajoki, Toni Ahlqvist et al.•ARTICLE•Futures•2026•References: 35

The future of universities is unclear. They face increasing pressures from market forces, political influence and societal expectations, which is challenging their traditional roles and values. Using a novel dialectic Delphi methodology, this study examined how members of a Finnish university conceptualized and analyzed potential futures extending to 2040. Grounded in a comprehensive literature review, we identified 10 dimensions relevant to univ…

  • An outline of future-oriented dialectics: Conceptualising dialectical positions, trajectories and processes in the context of futures research

    Open Access•Toni Ahlqvist•ARTICLE•Futures•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 45

The paper outlines a dialectical approach to analyse societal tendencies by emphasising future tensions, contradictions and antagonisms. First, the theoretical baseline of the approach is a commitment to the basic tenet of dialectical thinking: a perspective of the world as a process and a becoming. Second, the approach focuses on societal and socio-technical change trajectories and various dynamics in between. Third, it is based on systems and c…

  • Contextualising weak signals: Towards a relational theory of futures knowledge

  • Contradictions of Spatial Governance: Bioeconomy and the Management of State Space in Finland

    Open Access•Toni Ahlqvist, Heikki Sirviö•ARTICLE•Antipode•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 15

In recent years, the bioeconomy has emerged as a key policy idea in liberal western states. This paper analyses the bioeconomy as a state strategy. By building on theoretical strands by Poulantzas, Moore, and Castán Broto, the paper argues that the bioeconomy has to be understood simultaneously as an accumulation strategy within the capitalist world‐ecology and as a transformative agenda through which tensions in the state space can be governed. …

  • Neoliberalisation in a Nordic State: From Cartel Polity towards a Corporate Polity in Finland

    Toni Ahlqvist, Sami Moisio•ARTICLE•New Political Economy•2013•Cited by: 30•References: 21

In this paper, we present an outline of state transformation in the context of a Nordic welfare state. We use Finland as an example of the transformation process in which a welfare state form we call a cartel polity is shifting towards a corporate polity, a particular adjustment of the competition state. We conceptualise the corporate polity as a spatio-temporal fix under construction. The corporate polity is both an on-going process to build a c…

  • Engineering spatial fixes: Relational spatial practices, strategic‐topological approach and the construction of a finnish science‐technology district

    Toni Ahlqvist•ARTICLE•Geografiska Annaler Series B…•2013•References: 28

It can be argued that the relational approach, and especially the so‐called relational economic geography, would benefit from deeper engagement with the practical and strategic dimensions of spatial relations. The article proposes a notion of engineering spatial fix as a way to conceptualize these dimensions. The idea is to widen the conceptual sphere of relationality from spontaneous ties or abstract networked power effects towards relational sp…

  • Building Innovation Excellence of World Class: The Cluster as an Instrument of Spatial Governance in the E uropean U nion

    Open Access•Toni Ahlqvist•ARTICLE•International Journal of Urban…•2013•References: 17

E uropean spatial governance is becoming an intriguing mix of ideas from the economic, political and cultural spheres. This article asserts that, in the EU's spatial planning, the cluster is increasingly part of a hybrid spatial politics, here named the ‘cluster gaze’, based on the interplay of innovation‐oriented political rationality and spatial governance. To study this process, the article provides an empirical investigation into selected EU …

  • Potential Governmentality and the State Transformation in Finland

    Toni Ahlqvist•ARTICLE•Geopolitics•2013•Cited by: 3

This essay opens a perspective of potential governmentality on state transformation. It is argued that potential governmentality is a process of building a visionary script of an emergent governmental form linked to the creation of a new politico-economic path in a state. The essay discusses the idea of potential governmentality as a heuristic, elaborates the idea of state vigour as a generic form of governmentality and presents a case study in t…
