Diacritic and Distinctive Features in Avestan
The result of this study suggests that the Avestan alphabet is the first known one to systematically distinguish phonemic distinctive features by means of diacritic derivation. So far, the reconstruction of the Avestan sound system has been based on the bewildering orthography of the-relatively late-manuscripts, the most satisfactory one being done by Georg Morgenstierne (in 1942) who applied concepts of phonemics.
