  • The effect of the economic transition on the body mass index of conscripts in Poland

    Open Access•ławomir M Kozieł, Zygmunt Welon et al.•ARTICLE•Economics & Human Biology•2004

  • Sex differences in the pattern of age‐dependent increase in the BMI from 20–59 years

Open Access•Zygmunt Welon, Alicja Szklarska et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2002

This study tested the hypothesis of a linear increase of the BMI with age among adults. Materials comprised 32,762 occupationally active females and males 23–59 years age resident in Wroclaw, southwestern Poland. All subjects were medically examined in the course of health screening. The BMI increases linearly with age in women, but increases with age in men in two stages—a more intensive rise between 20–40 years and much slower increase between …

  • Variation in body mass index among Polish adults

Open Access•Tadeusz Bielicki, Alicja Szklarska et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2001•Cited by: 5•References: 14

Variation in the body mass index (BMI) among occupationally active inhabitants of one Polish urban center was studied by means of a three‐factor ANOVA. The material is cross‐sectional and comprises 32,750 men and women aged 22–60 years, examined in five successive surveys between 1983–1999. The factors considered in each sex were: 1) age category, 2) year of examination, and 3) social class. The increase of BMI with age is markedly greater among …

  • Effect of education and marital status on premature mortality among urban adults in Poland, 1988-1989

Open Access•Zygmunt Welon, Tadeusz Bielicki et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1999

Mortality rates among adults 25–64 years of age (premature mortality) in 1988 and 1989 were compared by educational status (a four-level scale) and marital status (married vs. nonmarried) in three Polish cities situated in ecologically different regions of Poland. Each of the two social factors has a significant influence on mortality after the effect of the other is controlled statistically. The risk of premature death increases regularly with a…

  • Fitness of professionals and skilled workers in Poland

Open Access•Elzbieta Rogucka, Zygmunt Welon•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1996

Simple measures of the biological fitness of adult men aged 25–65 years, inhabitants of the city of Wroclaw, Poland, were studied in two well-defined social groups: professionals and skilled workers. It was found that the manual workers, compared to professionals, have higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure, lower relative vital capacity, inferior flexibility of spine, poorer eye-hand co-ordination, and poorer hearing acuity. These social d…

  • Porównanie wpływu czynników społecznych na realizację dwóch potencjałów biologicznych

    Open Access•Alicja Szklarska, Zygmunt Welon•ARTICLE•Anthropological Review•1996•References: 4

The purpose of the study is an examination of the hypothesis whether the influence of each of the three social factors (urbanization, education, and occupation) on attainments o f two biological potentials: growth o f youth and fertility differ between each other. • Stopień degradacji środowiska naturalnego a rozwój fizyczny i stan zdrowia młodych mężczyzn w Polsce w latach osiemdziesiątych

    Open Access•Zygmunt Welon•ARTICLE•Anthropological Review•1994•Cited by: 1•References: 8

The study was carried out on 27,300 19-year-old Polish conscripts born in 1967. The measurements were taken in 1986, the year of their recruitment. The relationship between the degree of environmental pollution (expressed in the amount of dust and gases emission per 1 km2 in 1985-1987) versus body height and state of health on the day of their conscriptions was examined. No significant relationship between the body height and environmental pollut…

  • Biologiczna kondycja starszych mężczyzn (65-84 lat)

    Open Access•Zygmunt Welon•ARTICLE•Anthropological Review•1992•Cited by: 3•References: 5

The biological condition of the elderly men (65-84) was evaluated on the sample of 604 persons. The morphological and physiological traits were examined. The measure of the biological condition was proposed. The measure referred the distribution of the trait in the elderly to the distribution of the same trait in the young men

  • Drogi awansu chłopów polskich w świetle wskaźników antropologicznych

    Open Access•Zygmunt Welon•ARTICLE•Anthropological Review•1992•Cited by: 1•References: 2

  • Funkcjonalna specyfika typów somatycznych u dzieci

    Open Access•Zygmunt Welon•ARTICLE•Anthropological Review•1986•Cited by: 1•References: 2

The problem was analysed on the basis of examinations carried out in 1334 children in the age of 9 years from Lower Silesia. Anthropometric measurements by the modified Parnell’s method served to determine the somatotypes of the children. A battery of 6 tests of motoric fitness was used as the functional characteristics of the distinguished somatotype groups: L, M, T and S. During the analysis very distinct differences in the motoric fitness were…

Recent studies of the effects of socioeconomic stratification on stature and age at menarche in Poland are reviewed. The data are derived from a survey of conscripts in 1976, three nationwide growth surveys in 1955, 1966, and 1978, and several surveys of the timing of menarche. The data indicate a clear social gradient in stature during childhood, youth, and young adulthood, and in the age at menarche. Individuals from the larger urban centers an…
