  • The Environmental Health Impact of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans

James H Diaz, Kari Fitzmorris Brisolara et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2020•References: 9

Hurricane Katrina caused unprecedented flood damage to New Orleans, Louisiana, and has been the costliest hurricane in US history. We analyzed the environmental and public health outcomes of Hurricane Katrina by using Internet searches to identify epidemiological, sociodemographic, and toxicological measurements provided by regulatory agencies. Atmospheric scientists have now warned that global warming will increase the proportion of stronger hur…

  • A Commentary on Pseudo-Philo's Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum, with Latin Text and English Translation

Daniel J Harrington, Howard Jacobson•ARTICLE•The Jewish Quarterly Review•1996

One of the earliest and most important works of biblical interpretation is a Latin text that is commonly known as the Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum. It was written in the first second century C.E. and is thus a great source of illumination for the period and milieu out of which arose various Jewish sects and Christianity. This book offers the Latin text of LAB, a dramatically new translation, a commentary that deals extensively with LAB's place i…

  • Sabbath and Synagogue: The Question of Sabbath Worship in Ancient Judaism

Daniel J Harrington, Heather A Mckay et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Oriental…•1996

Sabbath worship as a communal event does not feature in the Hebrew Bible. In the context of the first century AD, according to Philo and Josephus, the sabbath gatherings took place only for the purpose of studying the law, and not for the liturgical recital of psalms or prayer. Classical authors depict Jews spending the sabbath at home. Jewish inscriptions provide no evidence of sabbath-worship in prayer-houses (proseuchai), while the Mishnah pre…

  • The Reception of Walter Bauer's Orthodoxy and Heresy in Earliest Christianity during the Last Decade

    Open Access•Daniel J Harrington•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•1980

First published in 1934, Walter Bauer's Rechtgläubigkeit und Ketzerei im ältesten Christentum warned against simply equating the words “orthodoxy” and “heresy” with the notions of majority and minority and with the process of deviation from correct belief to wrong belief. Bauer sought to show that in the first two Christian centuries orthodoxy and heresy did not stand in relation to one another as primary and secondary. He tried to prove that in …

  • The Original Language of Pseudo-Philo's Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum

    Open Access•Daniel J Harrington•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•1970

For all practical purposes, the lengthy and comprehensive essay of Leopold Cohn published in 1898 introduced Pseudo-Philo's Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum to modern scholars. To demonstrate that the existing Latin text was a translation from the Greek, Cohn listed individual words presumably transliterated from the Greek ( metra, holocaustomata, epomis, cataracte, eremus , etc.), noted that many biblical names were written according to their Greek…
