  • Antisemitism in the algorithmic age

    Open Access•Daniela Santus, Cristina M Bettin•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Religion…•2025•References: 2

This paper investigates how generative artificial intelligence (AI) is being used to produce and disseminate antisemitic propaganda, particularly in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It explores the epistemic, cultural, and legal implications of digital antisemitism, asking how algorithmic systems contribute to the distortion of Holocaust memory and the normalization of hate speech, including the recent rhetorical reinterpretation …

  • Fighting, Rescuing, and Building

    Open Access•Cristina M Bettin, Cristina Bettin et al.•ARTICLE•Modern Judaism - A Journal of…•2025

The contribution of Jewish volunteers from Mandate Palestine who fought in the Jewish Brigade in Italy during and after World War II was threefold. First, they served militarily as members of the Allied Forces fighting Nazi Germany. Second, they rescued thousands of Jewish refugees. Third, they helped Italian Jews reconstruct their communities and Jewish life, which had been destroyed during the war. However, as this article aims to show, the con…

  • Italian Jewish Identity and Zionism

    Open Access•Cristina M Bettin, Cristina Bettin•ARTICLE•Modern Judaism - A Journal of…•2022

Throughout the centuries, Italian Jews have been both accepted by and outside of Italian society, and several forces and events have shaped their concept of Jewish identity and their approach toward Zionism, both of which have changed over time. Among these events, the Emancipation, the Racial Legislation Laws of 1938, and the Holocaust all played a crucial role in transforming the way Jews perceived and identified themselves with Judaism. This a…

  • Voci della memoria

    Open Access•Cristina M Bettin, Cristina Bettin•ARTICLE•Forum Italicum A Journal of…•2019•References: 5

  • Italian Jews

    Cristina M Bettin•ARTICLE•The European Legacy•2013

In this article I discuss the history of Italian Jews from the Emancipation to the racial laws of 1938 and their present-day attitudes to Judaism and the State of Israel. My aim is to suggest how the policy of social integration enabled Italian Jews to construct a new identity without losing their ancestral heritage. The example of Italian Jewry is relevant to understanding the growing need in today's European Union—now comprising 27 countries wi…

  • The Role of the Holy Place in Memory and Nostalgia

    Open Access•Cristina M Bettin, Cristina Bettin•ARTICLE•Forum Italicum A Journal of…•2011

Holy places have always played an important role in the preservation of different identities, including religious, cultural, and national identity. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate, through the study of Italian Jews who immigrated to Israel from the early 1930 to the beginning of the 1950s, that their attitudes to Italy were similar to those of other Italians who emigrated from Italy to countries around the world. Like many Italians who re…

  • Italian Jews from Emancipation to the Racial Laws

    Open Access•Cristina M Bettin, C Bettin•BOOK•Italian Jews from Emancipation to…•2010

The Emancipation signalled the beginning of Jewish integration in Italy, a process that continued until 1938 when the Racial Laws were put into effect. In this book, Bettin examines the debate between

  • Jews in Italy between Integration and Assimilation, 1861-1938

    Cristina M Bettin•ARTICLE•The European Legacy•2007•Cited by: 1

The history of Italian Jews from 1861 to 1938 is often viewed as the period in which they totally assimilated into the Italian nation. This article, however, argues that rather than their assimilation it was a period of their integration into Italian society. Various approaches to this question are presented, including a review of the literature, with a view to reconsidering the relationship between Jewish culture and Italian culture, or rather n…

  • Identity and Identification

Cristina M Bettin, Cristina Bettin•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Jewish Studies•2005•Cited by: 1

The criteria by which Jews identify themselves cover a very wide range and change over time. The aim of this essay is to stress that Italian Jewish identity must be analysed in a historical context, in the larger society in which it is located and with which it interacts. Through the study of the activities of Italian Jewish youth, this article will demonstrate, on the one hand, the integration and uniqueness of the Italian Jews and, on the other…
