Applying the Landscape Model to Comprehending Discourse From TV News Stories
The Landscape Model of text comprehension was extended to the comprehension of audiovisual discourse from text and video TV news stories. Concepts from the story were coded for activation after each sequence, creating a matrix of activations that was reduced to a vector of the degree of total activation for each concept. In Study 1, the degree vector correlated well with participants' ratings of how much the sequence made them think of each conce…
The Effectiveness of Brand Placements in the Movies
Product placements within a movie are often treated as a binary variable: either they are present or absent. However, placements can occur at many different levels ranging from a simple background prop to the product being an instrumental part of the story. The influence of 3 different levels of brand placements on explicit and implicit memory for the brand, implicit choice behavior, and attitudes toward the brand were examined. The results confi…

The Influence of Accessibility of Source Likability on Persuasion
Attitude Accessibility and Persuasion
For a number of reasons, communication scholars have neglected the attitude construct. However, recent research on the cognitive basis of attitudes has thrived. This research suggests that the abandonment of the attitude construct may be premature. A complete understanding of how persuasive messages are processed and the effectiveness of attempts at social influence necessitates a reconsideration of the utility of attitudes. This chapter reviews …
Implicit Theories of Persuasion
This research explores whether individuals have implicit theories of persuasion. The first study sought to understand how persuasive strategies are cognitively represented. Using multidimensional scaling, two dimensions were identified. The first dimension distinguishes the types of tactics used to bring about attitude change. The second dimension differentiated the social acceptability of the persuasive strategies. The second stage of this resea…
Attitudes, Perception, and Attention
On the orienting value of attitudes
Four experiments tested the hypothesis that objects toward which individuals hold attitudes that are highly accessible from memory (i.e., attitude-evoking objects) are more likely to attract attention when presented in a visual display than objects involving less accessible attitudes. In Experiments 1 and 2, Ss were more likely to notice and report such attitude-evoking objects. Experiment 3 yielded evidence of incidental attention; Ss noticed at…
Representativeness and conjoint probability
Illusory correlation in the perception of performance by self or a salient other
