  • “Mussolini's Column”: Fascist Memorials and the Politics of Italian American Identity in Chicago

    Fraser M Ottanelli•ARTICLE•Italian American Review•2022

Eighty years after Benito Mussolini and his regime declared war on the United States, several Italian Fascist memorials still dot the Chicago landscape. These memorials are the name of a major thoroughfare and a plaque at the base of a Columbus statue in Grant Park honoring one of il Duce's closest associates, Italo Balbo, along with an ancient Roman column. Donated by Mussolini to Chicago in July 1934 to commemorate the first anniversary of the …

  • D anielle B attisti . Whom We Shall Welcome: Italian Americans and Immigration Reform, 1945–1965

    Open Access•Fraser Ottanelli, Fraser M Ottanelli•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2021

The title of Danielle Battisti’s book Whom We Shall Welcome: Italian Americans and Immigration Reform, 1945–1965 mirrors that of the report of a special commission established to examine federal policies on immigration and to recommend reforms by President Truman at the end of his time in office. In the report, the commission advocated that the 1924 National Origins Act’s restrictive quota system—which promoted a hierarchy of distinctions based o…

  • Hidden Out in the Open: Spanish Migration to the United States, 1875-1930

    Open Access•Fraser Ottanelli, Fraser M Ottanelli•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2020

Spanish migration dates back to early colonization. This long diasporic history, however, has traditionally favored the experiences of missionaries and conquistadors over those of wage workers. The essays in this collection address this omission and provide the first comprehensive English-language study of the hundreds of thousands of Spaniards who left their birthplace and journeyed to the United States and its territories mainly in the quarter …

    Open Access•S Elizabeth Bird, Fraser M Ottanelli•BOOK•Asaba Massacre•2017•Cited by: 7•References: 21

In October 1967, early in the Nigerian Civil War, government troops entered Asaba in pursuit of the retreating Biafran army, slaughtering thousands of civilians and leaving the town in ruins. News of the atrocity was suppressed by the Nigerian government, with the complicity of Britain, and its significance in the subsequent progress of that conflict was misunderstood. Drawing on archival sources on both sides of the Atlantic and interviews with …

  • The Asaba massacre and the Nigerian civil war: Reclaiming Hidden History

Elizabeth Bird, S Elizabeth Bird et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Genocide Research•2014•Cited by: 1

This article explores the consequences of a massacre of civilians in Asaba, a town on the west bank of the river Niger, during the early stages of the Nigerian civil war. While ethnically Igbo, Asaba was not part of the Igbo-dominated Biafra, remaining part of the ethnically diverse midwest region. In the international memory of the war, the midwest action, which claimed several thousand lives, has been eclipsed by the catastrophic events east of…

  • L'ombra lunga del fascio: Canali di propaganda fascita per gli " italiani d'America" (The long shadow of fascism: Channels of fascist propaganda for "Italian Americans")

    Fraser M Ottanelli•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2006

Writing on the eve of Pearl Harbor, the exiled Italian historian Gaetano Salvemini explained the widespread support of Italian Americans for the Fascist regime during the 1920s and 1930s as a reaction to the discrimination they suffered in U.S. society. Because they were looked down on as inferior “dagoes” and “wops” many Italian Americans, he wrote, embraced an idealized image of a modern, imperial, and feared “new Italy” that provided them with…

In early October 1967, four months into the Nigerian Civil War, federal troops massacred hundreds in Asaba, a town in southeast Nigeria on the west bank of the Niger. While ethnically Igbo, Asaba was not part of Igbo-dominated Biafra. Through the reconstruction of this event, the article fills a significant gap in the historical record and contributes to the discussion on the impact of traumatic memory at the local and national levels.
